Hi. I am making a map for a fantasy book and need to be able to duplicate mountains quickly. Is there a way to take a mountain (already drawn, colored, and cut out) and duplicate it without creating a new layer? I've tried creating brushes and stamp patterns but neither does the simple task that I'm looking for. I just want to be able to place a full image the way you would place any shape with a paint brush. Any Ideas? Any help is appreciated!
Well, what I have done is created six or so simple mountains of varying size and shape that I want to place over and over again (the map requires a few hundred to create the look of a mountain chain). So i'd like to be able to just select one, place it somewhere on the map, then select another one and so on. They will all be on the same layer; other elements of the map will be on separate layers.
Here is an example of what i'm making:
Take the time to do the creation of all your image elements carefully, or you risk having it look as though it's done poorly by someone who doesn't care. The eye/brain can easily pick out things that look exactliy alike.
Once you get one mountain on one layer, it's easy to duplicate layers, and transform them separately, change colors, use shadows, distort etc.
Plus being on separate layers one appears in front of the other.
Just a quick, simple example...

Yes, there is the Clone Stamp Tool.
Here's an example with just one clone source stamped several times onto a layer. The stamps can be as colourful as you desire, of course. The CST panel will let you use multiple sources and scaling to provide variety.
