Can't see images I open in CS6. OpenGL problem?

I used to have this problem once in a while with CS5, though not sure why it was only occasionally. I cannot see any format image that I open in CS6. The file opens fine - no error message - and then the screen is just blank. This used to be an Edit>Preferences>Performance issue, where I would uncheck the Enable Open GL Drawing box and all was fixed. But there is no such box in this new version.

 

I did try: Open>Preferences>Performance, and changed the Advanced Settings to Drawing Mode = normal. But no results.

    Yes, you need to update your video card driver from the GPU maker's website.

     

    And the GPU controls are there in the same place, just renamed because CS6 uses the GPU for more than CS5 did.

    I don't have a separate video card. I believe this model laptop has a combo CPU/GPU. And I'm not entirely sure that my attempts at updating the drivers have made any difference.

    You may be in a laptop catch-22, where there's not a good solution, because usually you have to get display drivers for onboard GPUs from the laptop maker.

     

    Have you tried the various Graphics Processor settings in the Edit - Preferences - Performance dialog?  Try all 3 advanced modes, and you can even fall back to disabling the GPU entirely.  Make sure to close and restart Photoshop after changing any settings there and before testing.

    There is still a GPU, and separate drivers for the GPU.

    Go to the GPU makers website and get the latest drivers.  Follow the directions (sometimes you have to uninstall old drivers first) to install the new driver.  Do not go to Microsoft or the system integrator to get drivers (they're typically years out of date).

    I have updated all the drivers now and the problem is resolved. But it took a call to Dell technical support. It was worth resolving the issue, I suppose. For future viewers, I'm on a Dell XPS17 with a combo CPU/GPU. The Dell tech support guy updated the NVIDIA drivers and a few other things I didn't follow... you may need to do the same thing if you have a laptop in this series.

    Thanks for following-up.

     

    FYI, you can generally get drivers for your specific Dell system via their web site.  Sometimes it takes a bit of doing to get to the right section, and some thought to decipher their packaging scheme, but they're there.
