I am using Envelope Distort to distort pixel based images. It is very powerful feature which gives you incredible amount of control. You can read more about this very powerful technic here http://goo.gl/YZXjX

I am using "edit Contents" to change the envelope but instead of staying fixed in place the new text shifts over to the side or the entire word does not fit in the "envelope." For example changing the work "Testing" to "Template" would result in an envelope with the word "Templa-" OR the work "Template" would more over a couple of inches to the side.

Please help! I need the full word to change and to lock in place. I know it used to so I'm not sure what changed. I am on CS5.

It is really difficult to guess what's going on from description without to see some screeshots. Did you tried to release envelope distortion from Object > Envelope Distort > Release and recreate it after changing text using  Object > Envelope Distort > Make with Top Object.
