I get the following error message when I try to open .CR2 files: "Unable to use the Camera Raw plug-in. It is not compatible with this version of Photoshop Elements".
I'm using PSE 9.0.3 with Camera Raw 6.5 plug-in installed on Win7 32bit PC. The photos were taken with a Canon Rebel T3i which is on the compatibility list. The camera was just purchased in January and this is the first time I've tried to open RAW. I used the update inside Elements to make sure I had the most recent version of Elements and the plug-in. Can anyone tell me what I'm missing?
Thanks for a quick reply. Yes, that is where I got the version number in my original post. The complete version # is 18.104.22.168. Before I found this 'About Plug-in' button to check to see if the Camera Raw plug-in was installed at all, I downloaded from Adobe. Then I checked the updates from the Help tab and made sure it was installed. What I'm thinking is to uninstall PSE altogether and re-install. Then update again. Anything else you can think of?
It should work. Before re-installing try going back one version to 6.4.1 Use the link below:

Have tried to install that download several times and I am getting messages that say the installation failed. It says to fix the problems below but it doesn't give me anything to fix! I chose to extract the zipped files and then ran the application. Guess I did it right? What next?
I think for PSE, version 9. Here is exactly what it said:
|Download Est.||1 hrs, 31 mins @ 56K modem|
12 mins, 19 secs @ DSL
3 mins, 4 secs @ T1
Uninstalling and re-installing PSE is the solution, but first see the instructions in this Adobe document:
The 6.4.1 installer download seems to be the correct one. I was asking about the 6.5 installer, since that is the one that seems to be in place when you get the error message, whether it was the PS version and somehow PSE knows.
After your 6.4.1 install fails you might run the Adobe Support Analyzer to see if it finds any troubles:
You can try to search your entire hard-drive for Camera Raw.8bi and find all such files to see if they are all the same size and date or if some are older or newer, and post what you find, where.
Some of these files may be under hidden folders so you may need to go into your Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View tab and enable Show hidden files folder a drives.
Well, originally I tried opening every which way: from Windows Explorer, chosing PSE in the 'open with' option and also from PSE Editor & Organizer navigating to one of the RAW photos. And every time I got a message that PSE "did not support this file format". Then I made sure the ACR plug in was installed and got basically the same thing except also that the ACR plug in "was not compatible with this version of Photoshop Elements".
Then I tried downloading the above mentioned ACR 6.4.1 and got a window that the installation failed. BUT, it must have actually installed or something as I can now open the RAW images no matter how I go about opening them! Wow--it must be magic.
Many thanks for your help. Not real sure how it got fixed, but it does seem to be fixed. It let me set PSE as the default program to open RAW and they open so I guess it works now!
