Same Character, Same Animations, Different Colors

I have a large project I am currently doing in Flash CS4, which involves creating simple characters. They all look the same, but they're all going to be colored differently and exported as PNG images for the animation.

My problem is this:

Is there a way to create a template character, animate it, then go back and recolor it without disturbing the animation? This would greatly speed the process a long. Thanks.

It is not clear to me how the png fits in with the animation, but if you want to change the appearance of the object that you are animating, then if you create that object as a graphic or movieclip symbol, and animate that symbol, you can edit the symbol without impacting the animation.
