HELP! Unexpected File Format Error

Jul 23, 2011 9:49 AM

I was recently working on a project in Flash CS5.5 for school, last thing i did was save the project and close the program. Next time I try to open it I get an error saying "Unexpected File Format", and the application closes itself out. I can open Flash by itself and work on anything else, but when I try to open my class project it repeats the same thing "Unexpected File Format" and closes. The file was originally started IN Flash CS5.5, and has not moved to any other program since then. I dont understand what happened. I really need this project working again, can anyone help?

unless you have a backup or a swf that works and you decompile the swf.

    Hi currydawg,

I am sorry that you are running into this bug. Can you please let us know what you did before saving your project? Please provide as much detail as possible. We are actively looking for ways to reproduce this issue. There is a chance that you may run into this issue again the second time since the bug is related to your workflow. If we can figure out why this is happening, we might be able to avoid it when you recreate your file. Please make sure to back-up copies and close/reopen the file after every save.

    Thanks,

    Quynh

    Hello,

I've just had the same error.

All I did was open the file - there were two missing fonts which I set to be replaced with a barcode font (so they could be easy to find).

I spotted a dynamic textfield was taller than it should be (suggesting it had been replaced with the barcode font, which it was).

I changed the font to the correct one.  Saved. Then the pop-up appeared telling me the program had an unexpected error (or something like that) and asking if I wanted to close the program or launch the browser to find a solution and then close.  After clicking close my file became unopenable with the Unexpected File Format Error.

However I tried doing the same thing again with the backup fla and so far no error has occured.

In case it's important at the time it crashed I also had FlashDevelp and Flash Builder 4.5 open and I was downloading the trial version of Flash Catalyst.

    Chris

    It's just happened again!!

This is really killing my deadline.  Same file, this time I had just deleted to fonts from the library, then clicked save to get the alert to kill flash.

This time I got the additional info from the "Adobe Flash CS5.5 has stopped working" alert box:

    Problem signature:

Then after clicking "Close the program" on the alert, I get another alert with the following in the problem details:

You need to change the extension from .fla to .rar. Then open it on WinRaR application. It will tell you that you have a damage archive. Just ignore it. Now go to Tools/Repair Archive. It will repair your file. After that, revert its extension to .fla. Hope this works coz it really works for me 100%.

Hello, thanks for mentioning the bug fix but as far as I know the CS 5.5 upgrade is not for free.

I sill have the CS 5 version, does it means that I have to pay to get a fix for this bug?
