Hello,
in LR3 folder panel if I wanted to filter missing photos or smart collection for selected folder-s, it was possible by crtl+click on a folder to see the selection in the grid which I used quite often. Now it no longer works. Has anyone noticed? I wonder why it's not possible with LR4.. Thanks
I wish Adobe would not just change stuff like this that people have gotten used to taking advantage of. I mean, I'm sure the union is useful too, but so was the intersection, and now everyone who took advantage of the intersection is screwed. Why not just add an option, instead of changing the behavior out-right? I realize that Lightroom is trying to stay streamlined and simple..., still, once the door has been left open for a while, shutting it often leaves people out in the cold. In this case for example, no behavior had been assigned to shift-ctrl-click on a folder, so that could have been used for the newer behavior - nothing cluttering the UI: just one more line on the list of keyboard shortcuts. If Adobe really felt the intersection behavior was bad for business, i.e. newcomers getting confused, the shift-ctrl-click could have been used for the older behavior. That would require the old-timers to re-learn, but at least the capability is still there............
Thanks for answers. Well, it's a shame. Rob, I agree with shift+ctrl stuff...but why to change it in a first place? I wonder if simplicity or such was the reason as I don't think it was confusing or complex. It just worked when you wanted and was much more useful then the union IMO. On the contrary the union is confusing to me. Wish they would change it back.

The current behaviour is how most people would expect ctrl clicking to work. That's a good enough reason.
Maybe. But what is actually the benefit of the current behaviour? I mean in Lightroom, I don't get it. For example I want to see and delete missing images from certain folder in a catalog, I'll do Find missing photos and then control click the folder and what I see now? Nothing, selection just stays on top of the grid with other missing files and all! images from selected folder are added to the bottom. Or if I want to see all b&w images I've done in a wedding I'm working on in that current folder. It was easily possible with a smart collection and ctrl+click folder. Now it's just confusing and not really helpful. Sorry
I'd say the current use is much more common than you think. Collections, like folders, are "sources" or containers, regardless of whether they are virtual or not. In almost evy common case, such as Explorer or Finder, Ctrl or Cmd clicking does a multiple select. I'm pretty confident that was why the old behaviour was removed, or corrected.
In a way, what you're doing is filtering the folder. Would saving some filter presets not do the job, or look up my workflow smart collections article.
I agree and understand what you're saying with explorer, finder, etc. I will check your site. But still wondering about such implementation in LR: Because the thing is multiple selection with ctrl/cmd just on folders worked before in v3 and works now still the same like explorer/finder etc. So it does work like every other common case environment. But why would I want this multiple select thing with missing photos or collections? That is what I find useless and not logical in LR case and it just messes up the grid view. I find LR3 behaviour more practical and just smarter in this.
I also find the "union only" situation frustrating.
But it occurs to me that it's actually a natural behavior.
Smart Collection are so convenient it's a pity we can't use them as permanent complex filter that even have an image counter.
Solution #1 :
Giving us a keyboard shortcut (ctrl+alt maybe) that show the intersection of selected sources.
Solution #2 (much more elegant) :
Allow the user to have a new "Selected folders" option as a source for a Smart Collection.
This would be in the SC rules where at the moment you can only set a "hard" folder rule.
With this solution you could have a SC set "Selected folder(s)" with stars, lens, reject, colors, crop, developing status sub-SC sets ;
then you click on any folder(s) and boom...
your SCs update and visually gives you the number of images rejected in the folder, or the number of images shot with your 50mm or the number of "5 stars" or processed images in the folder.
Solution #3 (temporary fix) :
Create SC sets as per Solution #2 but with the Quick Collection as source.
When you want to filter a particular folder, you select all its content and add it to the Quick Collection.
