When PE9 imports AVI's it "conforms" them

Unfortunately quite often it hangs at some point in the process. It could be 7% or for another file 25% etc. There is virtually no CPU usage, and Physical memory is around 50%, so it is not being overworked at the point of lock up. The only way to get out of the mess is the 3 finger salute and opt to close.

 

I cannot see a consistent reason why it does it, as the media being imported can be small eg 125MB and freeze, or be 1.5Gb and conform with no issues.

 

All the files have been created by the same program Audials one 9 via screen recording, and play equally well prior to attempting to import.

 

Perhaps it is not connected, but PE9 has an annoying habit of opening with previous information, either from Photoshop, or previous use in elements, even when one has selected "new project".

 

I have a Q9300Duel Quad processor, a Geforce GTS450 Graphics Card, and regrettably only 4GB of memory I am using Win7 64 service pack 1.

    Premiere Elements will not likely work with video created by another program unless it is created to certain specs. It sounds as though your Audials program may be using a codec the program can't read.

     

    Open one of your AVIs in a program like G-Spot or Media Info and post the specs here.

     

    We're most interested in your frame rate, resolution and, above all, your audio and video codecs. If the programs come back with "codec undetermined" it's pretty likely you're not going to be able to edit that video in Premiere Elements.

    Thank you Steve for your input.

     

    I shall check out the files with with one of those programs you mentioned and post further.

     

    However, the basic info you commented on WAS in the first post. ie. All the files have been created by the same program Audials one 9 via screen recording, and play equally well prior to attempting to import. Emphasis on ALL. The methodology being unchanged.

     

    Since making the first enquiry I have searched out every prel and prev file I could find, deleted them, uninstalled and reinstalled PE9 both via the Adobe uninstall, and with a clean up by myself which removed a lot of files/folders that were left behind.

     

    Unfortunately on starting the program with a NEW project it STILL remembered the video file I was trying to work on. The only difference being it did not show a graphic, whereas prior to the reinstall it was insisting on putting a jpeg from a totally unconnected location which was a birth certificate that had been scanned into the PC.

     

    I know not all problems are directly caused by the program that exhibits the defect, but PE9 has been flaky from day one. Essentials has been known to open with Jpegs that have been edited with photoshop, and photoshop has been known to open with video if I was working with PE previously.

     

    I have used photoshop quite a bit, but PE9 has only been used for one purpose, to tidy up or join files recorded via screen grabs. It used to work - after a fashion - now it seldom works, and remembers projects which "may" be conflicting with it.

    Xvid/Divx are output files, not meant to be edited (variations of the MPEG4 codec, often used for Internet streaming video) so, they mostly do NOT edit well (if at all) in any flavor of Premiere

    Thank you to Steve and John for the means of discovering the problem, and then the information as to what the problem was. Despite it seeming to be a PE9 issue it was not, it was GIGO.

     

    I have been able to change to output of the Audials program to WMV which IS recognised by PE9, so although I haven't had time to go through the whole cycle successful I can see there is hope of a succesful conclusion.

     

    I would also like to mention that the data checking program Media Info which was suggested was 32 bit but has JUST come out with a 64 bit version.
