InDesign freezes often and takes a long time (15-30 minutes) to begin running again with only small windows of usability. The computer isn't frozen, I can do whatever I want in any other program while InDesign is frozen, but InDesign is completely unresponsive. When InDesign is working it is not slow at all and works just fine, but it is only a matter of time before it freezes again for another extended period of time.
How can I fix it?

Have you tried resetting your preferences? http://forums.adobe.com/thread/526990?start=0&tstart=0
Try these solutions.
1. Reset the preferences ( http://help.adobe.com/en_US/indesign/cs/using/WSa285fff53dea4f86173837 51001ea8cb3f-6d21a.html#WSa285fff53dea4f8617383751001ea8cb3f-6d1ba )
2. Delete the SING component. ( http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/hang-freeze-open-create-file.html )
3. Check the user permissions and network / Domain policies (if applicable )
I have done some more investigation.
All of the files I work with are years old, and created in older versions of InDesign.
I have tried resetting the preferences, I have tried exporting as IDML and reopening. Neither of these worked.
I have located what seems to be the source of the freezing, I have sections in the bottom of the file: 4 appendices and an index, and when I delete these sections the freezing ceases completely. When I try to edit the masters for these sections it freezes again. I think there must be something wrong with the masters, but I do not know what it is.
Are there any known issues with editing documents from previous versions of InDesign that I should be aware of? Or any known settings for these masters I should look into changing to fix this issue with these masters? I would prefer to not delete them and try to recreate them.
