PS 7.0.1 for Nikon D3

Aug 7, 2012 1:35 AM

Does Photoshop 7.0.1 support RAW file of Nikon D3?

Where can I find the update file?

The D3 was first supported in Camera Raw 4.3, which works with CS3 (PS10).

You'd be better off using (free) DNG Converter 7.1 to convert them to DNG, but I'm not sure what raw support is like in PS7. There is a backwards compatibility setting in DNG Converter.

Having said that, the number of raw conversion tools available in old software is very poor compared to now. You might be better-servered by spending some money for Photoshop CS6 (expensive but possibly overkill), Lightroom 4.1 (much cheaper), or Photoshop Elements (cheap but limited), which should give much better results.

I don't believe that PS 7 even natively supported any raw files. Didn't Adobe only start integrating ACR with CS1 (PS 8)? I might be wrong about that, but PS 7 most certainly predates the D3 by quite a few years: PS 7 was released around 2001, and the D3 was released in 2007... So unlikely that it's supported.

Although I never saw it or used it, I have been told there was a very crude standalone converter that was available at one time that worked with Photoshop 7.  It was not a plugin, and it wasn't free.  But it only supported a very limited list of cameras, and there was no support for DNG.

If you are going to use raw images you are going to have to purchase new software.  Or, you could use ViewNX which is free software from Nikon.  It will convert raw images, although I prefer using Lightroom.  Lightroom is another good choice.  You could do all of your raw processing and then create tiff images to send to Photoshop.  Your version is very old, and there have been a lot of improvements.  You might consider switching to Photoshop Elements to work in tandem with Lightroom.  Regardless of what you choose, you will need new software to work with raw images effectively.

LOL, you could just shoot JPEGs if you're not willing to purchase a version of Photoshop newer than 7.0.1...

ACR 1 was a plugin for PS 7, but that was in 2003 and I am not sure there

    was DNG back then.

That's right, it was a plugin.  But it had to be purchased separately.  DNG support wasn't introduced until version 2.4.
