I now have my 7D updated to the new V2 firmware which allows image rating on camera.
Aperture and DPP will import the images and show the rating set on camera, LR4.1 on OSX 10.8 does not!
To do this on LR4.1 you have to import and then read meta data from file to get this info.
Can this be automated?
Or is this just a failing of LR4 not to read the embedded metadata during import which dpp and Aperture does as standard?
OK, it can be done. I apply a Metadata preset during import. In the preset the rating was checked, unchecking this and saving the preset now results in the rating being read from the file during import and not a blank setting being applied. Should have thought about it more before posting. But for others not seeing a rating, this is probably why ![]()
For some reason I was able to import a raw+jpeg image with a 7D rating without creating a special rating-enabled preset, and it did show up in Lightroom.

OT but where did you locate the v2 firmware? I read about it several months ago now via a Canon newsletter but have been unable to locate it via Canons site of late.
The reason for that is because Canon made an announcement a few months ago that they were working on the firmware update, but it wasn't done yet. That's why you were never able to find it before. The final release version of the v2 firmware is dated August 7, 2012, and that's why you were able to find it now.
I think you misunderstood my second post!!!
I use a metadata preset that populates all my copyright, name, details etc on import. In this preset that I created, rating was checked and set to "no rating". therefore during import it would rate all images at "no rating".
So I had to edit my preset and turn off rating in the metadata, so it now will read the rating metadata from the image during import.
It's so easy to select something that overrides what you think should happen!
If you don't use metadata presets, you have nothing to worry about ![]()
