I have been working with some illustrator files for a while and all of a sudden I cannot open them anymore. I do not even get an error message. I tried opening them on another computer. They open, but then when I order to re-link the images, the file just shuts down.
The files are quite large, but even when I make them smaller (smaller then when they were before this problem started), I still cannot open them.
I thought it might be related to the images, but also older files with no new images have the same problem.
Does anyone know what the problem might be?
Thank you very much for your help Scott.
The reason why I started copying the files in the first place is because the problem occured at the first computer. Since I did not copy the files anywhere at that time, I do not think the problem is crruption. (Could be the reason now (although my external hard drive is quite new), but not the reason for the probem at the original computer).
If the files are bad on the original system, why would you assume they would be good when copied to an external hard drive and opened on another system?
Bad files are bad files. They don't get "healed' by moving them.
You may have internal hard drive issues if files aren't working on the system which created them.
First thing to do is to disable any and all thrid party plugs in for Illustrator. Then relaunch and try again. If the problem persists, try removing the Illustrator preference files and try again.
After that, try a new user on the same computer.
