Please try to install the AIR runtime by itself, you can get the installer here:  http://get.adobe.com/air

Once installed, give the BBC app a try again.  If you have problems installing, just let me know.

Are you using Chrome as your browser?

Could you try downloading the .air file here and installing by double clicking?

does it have an AIR icon (brown looking box)?  If not, please verify that AIR is installed by running the installer again here: http://get.adobe.com/air

Ok, we'll want to take a look at your installer log to see what's going on.  Here's directions on how to find this.

I'm having the same problem using 64 bit Windows 7 on a Dell laptop. I have identified that it is related to using Chrome. If I use IE then there is no problem, even using IE Tab as a Chrome extension to run IE inside Chrome! However I get the same problem on Chrome on my Windows XP Pro PC in the office.

I would recommend the following steps:

    1. Download and install AIR 3.3 using this link:  http://get.adobe.com/air

    2. Once AIR is installed, download the BBC iPlayer .air installer here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/dm/version2/revisions/bbc_iplayer_desktop _v3215.air

    3.  Double click the bbc_iplayer_desktop_v3215.air file to start the installation.

We do have a known issue on Chrome with our webpage based installers.  Downloading these files seperately should work around this issue.

Thank you for your help. I have tried your suggestion and that certainly gets the latest versions of both Air and BBC iPlayer installed properly. However if I try to download a program on BBC iPlayer in Chrome it still prompts me to install  iPlayer Desktop again before it will download the program.

I was unable to reproduce this issue with Firefox.  Clicking Download "For iPlayer Desktop" started the download process in the AIR app as expected.  However, with Chrome I clearly saw the problem.  Could you please open a bug on this over at bugbase.adobe.com?  Once added, please post back with the URL so that others affected can add thier votes and comments.  While we work on resolving this, I'd suggest the following workaround:

    1. Navigate to "about:plugins" in the Chrome address bar
    2. Click the Details link in the upper right part of the page to expand all items
    3. Locate the "Shockwave Flash" entries (there will be 2 or 3 of these)
    4. Click "Disable" for the PPAPI copy (most likely the first one listed), which is probably version number 11.3.31.227
    5. Restart Chrome for good measure and try again

Could you try rebooting your system?  I'm not sure why iPlayer crashed, but it's possible that you might have to reset the application using the steps outlined in this post:
