nVidia GTX 680 preferences?

I'm looking to replace my aging FX3800 with a GTX 680 (either 2GB or 4GB) - largely for PP and AE CS6.

 

There's such a profusion of manufacturers...

...that it's difficult to know which is the best, and what the nuances are - if any.

 

Any guidance would be extremely welcome.  Thanks.

    From this list, clearly the EVGA - 4 GB. Acceptable price, nice amount of memory, nicely overclocked and a good reputation.

    If anyone is wondering how to preview on a (third) external monitor - the GTX 680 4GB is the way to go.

     

    Perfect sync at last - the 2-3 frame delay inherrent in the Blackmagic Intensity Pro has gone.  Not only that, but the third monitor can be used as a PC monitor when not using PP CS6 - not possible with the BMIP.

     

    I am also getting 20 tracks of XDCam EX material, all with three-way colour correction and differing layer blend modes.  It may do more than 20.  I haven't tried.  The Quadro FX3800 struggled with 4 (with the BMIP installed)

     

    It's probably complete overkill - as I haven't played a game since Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards in the 80s.

    Jon, just so I'm clear understanding - you're using this card to view the extended desktop across two monitors, and using a third monitor as a client monitor, with a full frame output of your timeline?  I thought I read that this was not possible or advisable elsewhere on this board?  If you are having success with it, a couple of questions:  what did you need to do in PP & Windows to configure this, and (for you or the other experts here), would this work as well with an EVGA 4gb gtx 670?  Thanks, getting ready to start my build, would be happy to avoid the cost of the black magic card if feasible.

    Stu, there was no configuring to be done with the GTX 680.  With PP CS6 you are presented with a preview/output option in Preferences that includes the 3rd monitor - the same way that the Blackmagic options appear.

     

    Obviously it won't suit everybody.   I have retired my CRT engineering monitor and am using a Dell u2410 as my reference/client monitor.  Now that all my work is 1080p25 to be transmitted on LCDs, I need nothing else..

    Thanks Jon, this is encouraging.  I just ordered an ASUSPA24Q to use as my client monitor, my Sony PVM is officially a relic.  Once my basic build is up, I'm going to give this a try before picking up the BMD card.

    The BMIP is still useful for AE, by the way.  AE CS6 does not recognise a 3rd local monitor.  External preview needs to be either via firewire or 3rd party capture card.

    Good to know, thanks again.  Don't work too much in AE, I'll probably pick up the BMD card at some point, though.
