There's no way to have different resolutions for the text and the background image. If the 8mm frame grabs are so small that you have to use 4pt. type, then you'll see the small type pixellated when the image is viewed at a large size. When you save the image as a flattened file (e.g., JPG), the resolution of all layers will be the same.

What are you trying to do? There may be workarounds.

I guess one way around that might be to save the file as a photoshop pdf after adding the text.

But the text will only be non pixelated if your viewing the file in a pdf reader such as adobe reader.

If you open the file into an image editor the type would be rasterized and pixelated again.

Or maybe use Image>Resize>Image Size with resample checked and change the resolution to 300 (in the resolution box)

Then add your text and the type will be less pixelated, but the image itself may be of bad quality.

I am trying to put text labels on an old 1959 8mm film clip to identify all the folks in the scene. I grabbed a screen shot (from Sony VMS) to put the labels on. Then I import that back into Sony Vegas Movie Studio at a point where I split the movie and took the screen shot. So you are seeing the movie and then it goes to a still shot with the name labels for about 10 seconds, and then the movie resumes.

I have had this problem previously and the only way I found to improve the text resolution was to save the screen shot at a higher resolution - this helped a little.

Just thought I would ask to see if there was a better way to solve the problem. Since the text is on a separate layer, I assumed you could control the resolution of that layer, independently of the screen shot - guess not.

You could put the text below the picture by making a new document at 300 resolution and then copy and paste your screenshot into that document.

Add the text, then crop the document.

On the original you can always make the text bigger than the default 72 size, if you just want larger text.

Not sure that would work, if I am interpreting your suggestion correctly. I have the text labels located above each individual's head in the screen shot.

Maybe I could save the text layers as a new file, then increase the resolution of that new "text only" file and import it back into the screen shot. I will play around with that concept and see what happens.

Yeah i don't know if my suggestion would really work.

Maybe you could post a screenshot showing the picture at the vieing size and someone might have an idea.

Doesn't your video editing software allow you to create a text overlay?

Alternatively, in PSE, first use Image...Resize and resize the pixel dimensions of the frame up to the pixel dimensions at which it will be viewed. Make sure "Resample" is checked. Then add your text as usual.

Ken - Yes, Sony VMS does support text overlays. But I would have to have 9 separate overlays to put the names over the heads of each of the 9 people that I am identifying - each overlay would have to be on a different track. My VMS version only supports 10 video tracks, so the movie track would be #10, leaving me no available tracks for anything else I might want to add.

I think the image re-sizing option in PSE is probably my best bet. As stated previously, I have played with that option in the past and got the text resolution up to where it is at least readable. My hope was to find a quick way to control resolution on the text layer separately from the image layer

However, your text overlay suggestion (in Sony VMS) would be a viable option when I have less people to identify.
