I just upgraded to CS6 and installed ACR 7.1 but PhotoShop won't read my 5DMkIII CR2 files.
I am running Win7 64-bit.
My PhotoShop CS5 Extened reads those files using ACR 6.7 just fine.
But PhotoShop CS6 complains "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document".
Lightroom 4.1 loads the file just fine.
So what is going on?
Why can't PS read the CR2 files?
Thanks,
Mike

How would I have installed in the wrong folders? I subscribed to the CS6 cloud version and did the downloads and it didnt' work. Then I downloaded the ACR 7.1 installer and ran it. I didn't put anything in the worng folders, I simply trusted the Adobe installers to work correctly.
There should be one more Camera Raw… at the top of the list, above CompuServe.GIF so it seems that ACR isn’t installed for CS6.
How did you install ACR 7.1 for CS6: Help / Updates inside PS, from www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/ and downloaded then ran the installer, or did you hack things around a bit? Have you restarted PS and/or restarted your machine since updating?
I didn't hack things around.
I downloaded AdobeCameraRaw-7.1-mul-AdobeUpdate.zip from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=5391&fileID= 5026
I unzipped the file to a folder
I ran AdobePatchInstaller.exe dated 5/16/2012
It said it was installing ACR 7.1 and that the proces would take about 4 minutes.
After 15 seconds it finished and sait the installation was completed.
It didn't work.
I have rebooted many times.
If I run Photoshop CS6 and check for updates, there is no ACR listed.
What is the camera raw file and where should it be?
On a 64-bit system the two plug-in locations are:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS6\File Formats\Camera Raw.8bi
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS6\File Formats\Camera Raw.8bi
On a 32-bit system only the first one exists.
You might try checking your system with the Adobe Support Analyzer that checks the install logs and sometimes tells you what is wrong:
Adobe support advisor result = "Inspection could not identify any issues"
There is no folder named "File Formats" in the CS6 Plug-Ins folder.
A search for "camera raw.8bi" turns up several older versions of camera raw.
If I copy the CS5 File Formats folder to CS6 Plug-Ins, Photoshop can read the CR2 files; but it reads them using ACR 6.7 instead of 7.1.
How do I get "camera raw.8bi" for 7.1?
There is a more manual installation processes:

For dyed-in-the-wool system gurus, it's actually possible to copy files out of the provided zip file and put them in the proper folders (some of which you have already identified). I have a post or two on this forum detailing more info about that somewhere.
Keep in mind there are two separate plug-in files for 32 and 64 bit operation. Paths with (x86) in them are for 32 bit.

I don't see an installation process at http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/extend.html
I found a much better and simpler process on a site other than Adobe. It seems to work, see below...
You’ve done half of the hacker install—what Noel gives the complete version of somewhere else in the forum messages. There are both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the plugin, and you probably want both since you may not always be in the 64-bit application. You need to extract each from the appropriate place in the patch zip file. I think one is 1003 and one is 1002---you can easily tell which is which from the size compared to everything else.
Drat! I put up the wrong link. Sorry about that.
This is the one I meant to put up: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5391
