Rendition for iPad 3 won't publish

I'm having trouble publishing a rendition. I've done this before and have had perfect success, but this time it doesn't seem to be working.
I created the rendition by making a new folio that's 2048x1536 and then importing (in the InDesign folio builder: Import - Import multiple articles) the 1024x768 files. Like I said, I did exactly this for a previous publication and it worked fine.
The 1024x768 version publishes, but the 2048x1536 slowly crawls to about 30% before it fails. It's 510 MB.
I've already re-built everything completely and I'm positive I did everything correctly. I just can't think of anything else to do. I'm wondering if maybe there's something in the 1024x768 files that doesn't transfer well into a 2048x1536. (I'm loath to change any of the files, because everything has been approved by the client and the publish date is coming.) Or maybe there's something glaringly obvious I'm missing.
Has anyone else experienced this, and can anybody lend any insight on how to solve it?
