Q2ID Quark 8 to CS5.5

Hi,

 

I have a single file I need converting from Quark 8 to InDesign 5.5.

 

Everything I have read seems to suggest Q2ID is the best solution, but the price seems a little steep as there is a good chance I will never need it again due to this being a one off file.

 

Firstly, has any other solution been developed thats not as expensive.

 

Secondly, are the results worth it for one job, 20 pages long?

    There is no other software which does the conversion except InDesign itself. But InDesign can only convert VERY OLD Quark files (3.3 or 4, I believe).

     

    As to whether it's worth it, you probably also need to consider whether you'll ever be receiving any other Quark files in the future.

    This was a one off job done by an external company that has since closed down, so I cant even get them to back save it.

    In that case, I personally wouldn't buy Q2ID. If it was a regular client, or if you were in a company migrating from QuarkXPress, it would be different.

    Contact Markzware and see if they’ll do a one-off trial for you.

     

     

     

    It would be a violation of the Q2ID license for anyone else to do it for you.

    Thanks Steve, thats what I was thinking, big cost for 1 file.

     

    Thanks for the suggestion Bob but from what I have read they stopped doing single conversion. Might still be worth asking. Hopefully they will be in a generous mood.

    Whether that it is a legal, fair, or enforceable condition is another

    question...

     

    Personally, I'm in the habit of doing a quick printing job for my

    neighbor if he asks. Hope that isn't a violation of my LaserJet license!

    Have you tried looking for a Quark user who could back save it for you to a version that InDesign can convert?

    peter has the key!

     

    i can TRY convert from Q8 to Q4, in several steps involving different versions of Quark and then open the file in iD. i usualy use the Markzware plugin, but I dont want to break any law, and it will be fun to try the looooong way.

    They try to frighten you with laws, but not all conditions are legal or

    enforceable. Certainly I think this one is not fair.

    From my understanding, it needs to go back to 3.0, meaning someone would have to have 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 installed. Then back save it one edition at a time.

    Is that a bit much to ask of someone?

    If the file were available as pdf,

    The much maligned use of Illy would enable picking apart elements, or

    Acrobat could export all the images and export the text, or

    PDF2ID (PDF to InDesign) would be an investment consideration.

    as i said, i can try... but just stopping in Q4 is enough because iD can convert internally from there, for that i only need the Q5, 6, 7 and 8!!!! Q4 is only classic environment, not working anymore...

    They’re not trying to frighten anyone. They’re running a business and they sell a product that is worth every dime of the $200 they charge for it.

     

     

     

    If you don’t like the conditions, don’t buy it.

    i also think it worth every dime, but my english is poor, and legal terms are confusing even in my own language.

     

    but i can not imagine the redaction of a law that not let me do with my plugin what i want, if i'm not lending the software, or recieving money for my conversion, ot using it in a part of a process, only doing a simple conversion for a friend who came with a qxd in a USB. what if i consider a part of my religion, to help the ones in need... o take the conversion of documents as my own personal duty...

    thanks for the comments. I will send a link over on Monday if thats ok as Ive left the file on a disc elsewhere.

    Im not denying the software isnt worth the money but for 1 file its a bit expensive. Would be great if they offered a single file conversion for somethin like $5. I would happily pay then to have that one file done. But anyway thats off topic. I just wanted to know what options i had and how good the software is. So thank you to everyone for their input.
