How do I rename photos on import without loosing the previous file names and captions?
I meant to ask if I can save captions put on the images in Bridge when importing into LR- saving them as a caption (or title?) and not as a file name. It would be helpful to do this in batches: I'm converting a messy pile of folders in Bridge into an organized data base in Lightroom but I don't want to loose the individual information on each image.
For an overview see:

Provided either organisational metadata or image edit (develop) metadata has been written onto the file - as a separate XMP sidecar file, or inside for example a DNG image - Lightroom will pick it up automatically at import.
If this info changes subsequently, due to accessing the images independently of Lightroom, LR should detect this, and prompt for whether its Catalog info should be updated to suit that.
ACR metadata may not get picked up, if this has been set to live inside Bridge's Camera Raw database instead of in XMP form in/alongside the image file where Lightroom can see it. There is an option in Bridge's Camera Raw Preferences dialog, which appears to control this.
