Any ideas why several of my Keyboard Shortcuts have stopped working?

The text below is from the Adobe Keyboard shortcuts listing on their site. It has been edited to show what's not working. There may be others, but these are the most obvious and crippling. I'm on a Mac using InDesign CS6, but this happened while I was still working in 5.5:

Temporarily selects Hand tool

PC only

Mac: Spacebar (Layout mode) and Option+Spacebar (both), The "option" key in text mode works.

Temporarily selects Zoom In tool

PC only

Mac: Command+Spacebar

If you have any suggestions, they would be deeply appreciated.

If you are running Firefox or Chrome as a browser, there have been problems reported with both of these. Try turning off the addons in Firefox or the application for Chrome and see what happens.

If you're on a Mac, open System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts. Check your Spotlight keyboard shortcuts. They may be interfering. I usually set them to be Ctrl + Space and Ctrl + Option + Space instead of using the Command key.

Are you using any third-party utilities which could be "grabbing" (sorry for the bad pun!) that shortcut?

Do you have Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop installed? Does the Hand tool work in those applications? (Hint: It works exactly the same as in InDesign.)

There are two troubleshooting techniques that might help:

    (1) Try creating a new user on your computer, and run InDesign (or Illustrator or Photoshop) from the new user. If the Hand tool works there, there could be something in your user that's causing a conflict.

    (2) Try restarting your computer and hold down the Shift key while it relaunches. This turns off third-party plug-ins. If the Hand tool works, then a third-party plug-in may be grabbing the Hand tool shortcut.
