How to automatically create sub menus and automatically fit video to standard DVD with best quality.

Aug 9, 2012 9:56 PM

I have Adobe Production Premium CS5 and Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

PART 1:

I used to use premiere elements and if I set up chapter markers and named them, when going to set up a dvd (which was integrated in premiere elements) I would chose a menu and sub menu template and elements would automatically create the create number of sub menus with each chapter corresponding to my chapter markers.  Each chapter would also be named by what I named the chapter markers.

I want to know if there is a way to do this in Encore?  i already have a sub menu template which has motion menus.  I searched the help once on how to automatically create menus/chapters.  Forget exactly what it was but for some reason I couldn't get it to work.  I kept getting error messages.

So I have the timeline set up in Premiere Pro with all the chapter markers in place and I named each one.  I bring it into Encore (and all chapter markers are there).  I have a sub menu template already made (it has 4 buttons which are motion menus).  I want encore to automatically create the correct number of submenus to match my chapter markers and have the name of each chapter match the name of my chapter marker.

Is this possible?

PART 2:

I have Sony XDCAM EX footage recorded in 1080P high definition.  My timeline in premiere pro matches this.  I edit everything in HD.  I want my final product on standard single sided DVD.

When I bring the project into encore (either with File - Import Premiere Pro Sequence, or from premiere with Dynamic Line - Send to Encore), everything sets up fine and looks good.  But when I burn the disc using Encore's automatic transcode settings, the final video (on computer or dvd player) has these zebra lines throughout the video.

If instead, I do the same thing but before burning the DVD, I render out of premiere using Adobe Media Encoder, to mpeg 2 high quality.  I then replace the files in encore with the new transcoded files.  Now everything burns fine, as encore doesn't do the transcoding.

Question 1:  Does anyone know why encore transcoding causes a problem but media encoder doesn't?

Question 2:  I have my first project that is well over 2 hours so using the automatic transcode in encore seems to best way to get it to fit on a single standard dvd.  Since I can't seem to use this, what is my best option to automatically get it to fit?  I know I can probably render from premiere using a lossless format and then bring that video into encore and have it automatically transcode (I haven't tried this yet).  But I am trying to avoid rendering twice.

Sorry for the long post.  Thank you for any help.

It is called "create chapter index" in Encore.

    Edit: Here's the help link.

Many HD to SD users do not like the automatic results (because they don't like the Encore encode compared to going direct from Premiere, or using their own preferred encoders). Use a bitrate calculator and export from Premiere.

    yes, target = average.

There was a bug for h.264 2-pass vbr, but I don't recall what it affected and under what conditions. If you have long transcode times, check your work flow with a 15 minute secton all the through to a burned disk.
