question

I have used the brush tool before, but this time, when I click on the brush tool in Edit space, nothing happens. When I point at the area I want to brush, the usual tool does not appear. I've chosen color and size of brush. Advice?

Have you tried to Right-Click on the brush tool and then selecting the correct one you want to use?  Perhaps the tool you have used in the past is now hidden and so the right-click will unhide it.

    Good luck.

Is it only the brush tool that's not working?  Do the other editing tools work?

Yes, I tried using the right click as you suggested, to no avail. Any other ideas? Thanks for your response.

Well in that you could reset your preferences so that everything starts working as it was when you first installed the software.  When you start your software, do you see the welcome screen like this one:

If you see this screen then before doing anything pres: <CTRL+ALT+SHIFT> with one hand and clicking on the EDIT button with the other.  Keep pressing the CTRL+ALT+Shift keys until you see another window like this:

Click YES and you are done.  Everything will start to work normally.

    Hope this helps.

Are you sure it's the brush and not one of the other tools that shares its toolbox slot, like the replace color tool or the impressionist brush?

If so, before deleting prefs you can go to the left end of the options bar, click the tiny  arrow, and choose Reset Tool from the flyout menu.
