I have the latest update of LR 4.1 and newest firmware for my D800, but I start start it says camera not detected. I tried restarting the PC, LR, the camera, etc. several times but nothing. Any advice?

The D800 isn't yet supported for tethering.

Try Apple Aperture or Phase Capture One Pro. There are others that will support tethering as well with newer DSLRs from Nikon and Canon.

Adobe, hasnt seen fit to bother to support tethering yet.

I am so deeply upset with this company and their shotty support for Lightroom in both performance and key essential features.

Aperture is only for Mac; and Capture One Pro isn't in the same game IQ-wise (just wait until you need to recover some highlights), in addition to being hugely more expensive than Lr.

Just what value is an app if it is only updated on a glacial pace ... at any price or on any platform?

While Aperture may be platform specific ... and C1 Pro may be more expensive ... at least their developers think timely tether support is important to their user base. Aperture has offered tethered support for the Nikon D800/D800e/D4 and Canon 5dmkII/D1x since May ... C1 Pro added support in July for those cameras ... Lr4? It may have support on the next quarterly update ... but we don't know for sure if it will ... and what if any caveats will preclude tethered functionality for any given camera, computer or OS combination ... it's akin to Russian Roulette in the outcome whether the resulting feature will work for the user ... at leats with Aperture and C1 Pro ... it works NOW ... not maybe in the future ...

If Adobe wants to offer tether support for Lightroom, they should take it more seriously and update it in a more timely manner. Or just drop the feature all together ... playing games with user's livelihoods is not fair to anyone involved.

    Well put Butch.

While, C1P is geared towards the higher end of commerical photographers, Apple Aperture is very affordable, at $79 dollars in the App store for the full version, it is actually less expensive than Lightroom.

For $80, you can work now, hell, you could even tether through Aperture, and use a watched folder/auto import in LR if you dont want to actually work in Apple's program.

I dont think Adobe realises the affect their glacial attention to professionals has on us. Not only is my professional life put at a great disadvantage, it also personally upsets me deeply. I want to work, I can't. Lightroom has tied my photographic hands.

In the mean time, I am working with Aperture and although I have used C1P off and on for years, I may return to it for my primary processing and workflow. — furthermore. I should note. That C1P added support for the new Cameras mid/late release of their current software. That is, they didnt rush out buggy software, and force users to upgrade to it like Adobe did with LR4.

I am very curious to see what Capture One 7 will be like.

*Sorry, I overlooked the Mac only comment for Aperture, I'll skip the Mac fanboy type comments, but I am sure there are solutions out there in the PC world too. Furthermore, Phase has C1P on sale half off till Aug 12 (today as I write this) at USD $149

Y'know, you two, to hijack a thread simply to resurrect and whine about your own personal issues with Adobe and Lr is pretty much the definition of trolling. I'm sure DPReview can accommodate you if all you want to do is troll.

The simple fact is that you don't know the OP is on a Mac, so Aperture might well literally be an irrelevance; and Capture One Pro is an expensive "maybe" solution - what good's tethering if the IQ isn't there? And - again - it's a troll's trick to recommend competitors' software on an Adobe forum just because you're bent out of shape with Lr.

Many reasonable thinking folks could also think marching in lock step with the staus quo comments in support of incomplete software as a form of trolling as well ... Funny, when I visit an Aperture 3 centric forum ... I rarely if ever see a protest from participants when features are compared to Lightroom ... some folks seem to be more open minded than others ...

There are many top tier photographers offering their wares to many Fortune 500 concerns that seem to not be suffering from a loss of image quality using software options that don't come from Adobe.

I am not expressing my views in this forum because I want Adobe to fail or suffer ... it's exactly the opposite ... I want them to continue to live up to their once superior product offerings. I will continue to point out when they don't live up to expectations.

Sure, the IQ that Lr 4.1 is capable of what may be considered better than some competitors ... but Lr is supposed to be a RAW workflow solution ... not just a RAW converter ... otherwise we should just go back to a Bridge, ACR, Ps worflow ... we would get the same results in the end as pertaining to IQ ... using multiple apps to complete tasks that Lr was conceived to handle with a single UI ...

If pointing out where Adobe is falling short with that aspect offends you ... simply ignore those comments here and learn to control your compulsion to respond in defense of an indefensible point of view ... I thouhgt the U2U forum was for discussion ... not an exclusive fan club where only a lemming like mindset is welcome ...
