How can I resolve installation errors DF024 & DF037 for CS5.5 on Mac?

Please help. I've gone through the forum posts, as well as searched the Internet, and find the matter daunting. Have tried to implement a solution and may have caused more problems. Assistance would be greatly appreciated.

 

PROBLEM:

I am unable to uninstall or reinstall both Dreamweaver 5.5 and CS 5.5.

Continually get extensive number of the following errors:

ERROR DF024 Unable to preserve original file...

ERROR DF024 Unable to move file…

ERROR DF037 Unable to delete directory…

 

SYSTEM CONFIG:

Adobe CS 5.5

Mac OS 10.7.4

MacBook Pro 2.5 GHz

Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB Ram

 

BACKGROUND (History appears chronologically in 4 parts.):

  • CS 5.5 was already installed and functioning fine, then upgraded from OS 10.6 to 10.7. Noticed issues with elements not appearing in DISPLAY VIEW of Dreamweaver, but was correct in CODE VIEW and BROWSER PREVIEW.
  • Tried to reinstall and uninstall Dreamweaver 5.5 several times using the CS 5.5 installation disk. Consistently got DF024 errors. NOTE: After first attempt. installer marked Dreamweaver as already installed, but not the others. Using the Finder, the Dreamweaver directory appears to be empty unless the files are now hidden. Nothing regarding the application can be seen in the Trash. Also unable to launch any other Adobe CS apps.

  • SLConfig.xml appeared to be an alias pointing to a file of the same name in the Mac version. Went to original file, made a new alias and replaced the corrupted file.
  • Then rebooted system and relaunched CSS5.5 Installer with all apps selected. Program started and ran for about 15 min before reporting more errors, now with error DF037 as well. Did this again with the same results except the DF037 error did not reappear. It appears the the problems are mostly in two directories:

/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfiles/

and

/Library/Application Support/Adobe/ssc/DesignSuitePremium-CS5.5-Win-GM/

but I am not sure how to best resolve this.

    It sounds like you probably did an in-place installation of Mac OS X 10.7 which did not go well.

     

    I think you need to start from scratch: Back everything up first using a utility like Carbon Copy Cloner onto another disk (I use a Firewire-connected drive.) Then do a CLEAN installation of Mac OS X 10.7 after wiping your hard drive, and use Update to go to 10.7.4. Then reinstall Creative Suite 5.5 from scratch from your original media. Copy your files from your backup.

    Probably SLConfig.xml shouldn't be an alias at - "/Library/Application Support/Adobe/ssc/DesignSuitePremium-CS5-Win-GM/SLConfig.xml".

    Try renaming this file (or take a backup of this file/folder and remove it from this location) and then run the installer again.

    Hi Steve,

     

    Thanks for replying. What do you mean by "in-place installation"?

     

    Here's a history of my OS:

    10.5 Pre-installed

    10.6.3 Upgraded via retail disk

    10.6.8 Updated via downloaded file from Apple support site: MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.8.dmg

    10.7.? Upgraded via downloaded file from Apple App Store; filename unknown; cannot locate

     

    Would rather save your suggestion as a last resort.  Not sure how I would manage an upgrade to Lion as I can no longer locate that file on my hard drive.

     

    Is there anyway to clean install CS 5.5?

    Since my initial posting here, I've attempted a few more installations. Each time a file from /Library/Application Support/Adobe/ssc/ would appear with the same error DF024, and it was always an alias. So each time I would replace the old alias with a new manually created alias pointing to the same original as the old alias. Sure enough, when I relaunched the installer,  error DF024 with the old alias no longer appeared, but a new error DF042 with another alias from the same directory did appear. Then I manually replaced  all aliases found in the /Library/Application Support/Adobe/ssc/ directory with new ones I created.

     

     

     

    Upon rebooting and relaunching the installer program, the program did not stop at around 12% as consistently it did up until now. Instead, it progressed to 80% before it stopped and reported a huge number of new errors. Most of them pertain to the inability to roll back the installation it had attempted. No files from /Library/Application Support/Adobe/ssc/ appeared in the new log report.

     

     

     

    To gain a better understanding of the logs, I downloaded AdobeSupportAdvisor and tried using it, but it referred me to online solutions that weren't relevant to my situation (i.e., one mentions Photoshop CS4 and I've never installed CS4).

     

    I also tried following the articles from the Adobe knowledgebase:

     

    • cspid_84451: Troubleshoot with install logs | CS5, CS5.5, CS6
      which is fine if you only have a few errors, and
    • cspid_83481: Installation, launch log errors | CS5, CS5.5, CS6, CCM
      which doesn't list error DF024.

     

    At this point I've decided to not not make anymore attempts without some expert guidance.

     

     

    The log file seem too large to post here. If you would like review the log, I can perhaps post it on www.pastebin.com unless you can suggest a better way. Please let me know.

    my suggestion was to remove the old alias but do not create any alias or file in its place. As most probably the installer is not able to replace that file/alias at this location and hence failing.

    If you would have to do a clean install as a last resort, you would back up your computer. Then use Disk Utility to erase your computer. You would re-install 10.6 from your retail disk. Then you would use the App Store to download and install 10.7 again. (If you've bought something from the App Store, you can download it again at no charge.) Hopefully, you won't have to do that.

    If you’re going the clean install route, I would just download it again (if you can, I’m not sure you can do that anymore with Moutain Lion out) and use this: http://blog.gete.net/lion-diskmaker-us/

     

     

     

    Create a USB boot disk and just boot to that. Everything else is pretty straight forward.

    I'm rather perplexed about this OS clean installation recommendation. Perhaps my earlier explanation was misleading and prompted this idea.

     

    The reality is that my Mac seems to have run without any problems since the OS10.7 upgrade and I use DiskUtility regularly to scan and fix errors when found as well as ruh Software Updater.

     

    Since the time I discovered the display problem in Dreamweaver, I have subsequently diagnosed the problem, which was caused by corrupted font files and not by Dreamweaver. Now I regret trying to reinstall Dreamweaver, which is how I got into this mess. My font issue appeared  in other applications only after I discovered it in Dreamweaver. That leads me to think that the problem appears to have occurred very recently, which is a substantial amount of time since my upgrade to OS10.7 Lion.

     

    Having said all that, does it still sound like I may need to run a clean install? And, if so (and please excuse my ignorance), would you kindly explain. I wouldn't mind running a clean install a couple of months down the line, but right now, the timing can't be worse.

     

    Is there any way to uninstall all of CS5.5 either manually or otherwise and start over? Does Adobe have a utility that could do such a task?

     

    With each failed attempt to reinstall or uninstall CS5.5, did the installer leave my computer in its previous state (before I tried to install)?

     

    Can TimeMachine help me here? What would happen if I restored my system and files to a backup that was made before I made the very first failed Dreamweaver and CS5.5 installations were run?

    The best way to remove all components of a Creative Suite installation is the Adobe Cleaner tool, here:

    Hi Steve,

     

    I used the Creative Suite Cleaner tool and whereas before the installations would stop early on, the clean up with the tool allowed it to progress to 99% before quitting. It might be that there were multiple layers problems and the tool help resolve some but not all of them.

     

    Unfortunately, even with the help of Adobe Tech Support, getting past the 99% was unsuccessful and Fireworks is still not installed. Worse yet, after a long string of attempts with Tech Support using different configurations, my Mac would not reboot, but rather turned itself off during the boot up process. I was able to start up in Lion Recovery Mode, repaired things with Disk Utility, reinstalled Lion with the internal installer and finally boot up normally.

     

    Then, with Disk Utility I rechecked the disk and permissions to be certain they were OK, and attempted one more installation using the Adobe CS5.5 Installation Disk. The installation failed in the same way, but this time left my system hosed. Even in Recovery Mode, Disk Utility was unable to make repairs, giving notice that the disk needed reformatting and a new installation of the OS.

     

    So, you were right, the need for clean installing the OS was inevitable, but not easy to achieve. Will contact Apple in the morning to see how I can get a hold of the Lion install program. The one in the hidden Recovery partition won't do it, stops early on with at non-specific error message. Apps Store no longer offers it, and I am unable to access a history of my App Store purchases. But these issues are probably beyond the scope of this forum.

     

    Hopefully, I can get this resolved soon and back to installing CS5.5. I'll heed your advice to install CS5.5 before using Migration Assistant or making other installations to the cleanly installed system.

     

    If I discover something that could be useful here, I'll be sure to post it. Meanwhile, if you, or any one else, have additional insights, I would be most grateful. Thanks to everyone for being supportive.
