InDesign CS5.5 crashes while applying Template to a page

Hi,

 

We installed Adobe InDesign CS5.5. on 10 Windows XP SP3 32-bit workstations with 2 GB RAM. On every computer, when a user tries to apply a template to a page in a .indd document, InDesign immediately shuts down without displaying any error messages. Using the Sysinternals Tools and Dr.Watson, I think that the faulty plugin might be this one: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS5.5\Plug-Ins\Layout\PAGES PANEL.APLN.

Has anybody ever experienced this issue ? Are there known workarounds ?

    Apply a template to a page? Do you mean apply a master page?

     

     

     

    Is CS5.5 fully patched to 7.5.3?

     

     

     

    And 2 GB RAM? That’s barely enough for the operating system.

    Hi,

     

    I am not sure if this is a "Master Page since we use a French version (the functionnality is  named "Gabarit" in French), so here is a printscreen which shows what our users try to do:

    Immediately after the drop is completed, InDesign shuts down without further notice as described before.

     

     

    I fully patched one machine to 7.5.3, rebooted it and it still does not work.

     

     

    I know 2 GB is a little bit short, but since this is currently a corporate standard in my customer's organization, I will need to be sure that this is the direct and only cause before any upgrade request can be made.

    Yes, that's applying a master page.

     

    Personally I don't think this is RAM related.

     

    Again, is ID patched to 7.5.3? Hold down the Ctrl key and choose About InDesign from the Help menu to check.

    I would doubt that’s the cause if it’s happening on every machine and yes, that’s a master page that’s being applied.

    Sorry, you did say that earlier and I missed it.

     

    Happeing on multiple machines sounds like a software conflict with something else on all of those machines. Any third part plugins? A font manager?

     

    I don't think it will make a differnce, but have you tried trashing the prefs? see Replace Your Preferences

    No problem ! :-)

     

    I will build a new machine with only ID and the standard corporate XP image. From there I will try to identify if there are software conflicts and let you know.

     

    I tried to replace the preferences (renaming the old files then launching ID again) but it did not help.

    Hi,

     

    I got additionnal info from my customers: We actually installed InDesignCS5.5 in order to replace PageMaker 7.0. They were trying to create .indd documents with their old PageMaker Templates (.pmd), which I think is the main reason for this strange crash behavior. Furthermore, the crash doesn't occur when they create a new document from scratch. I confirmed these results on a brand new system by using both the sample document they sent me and a blank file.

     

    The good news is that this does not seem to be an applicative problem. The bad news for them is that they might have to recreate all their old PageMaker templates from scratch...Does anybody know about an easy way for them to convert their pmd files in order to avoid such problems ? Or will they have to start over ?

    THe best thing would be to rebuild from scratch. Next best option is to open the PM file and hope for the best, then export to.idml, open that and fix what needs fixing before resaving as an ID template.

     

    Given these are templates, I wouldn't spend time on second-best, myself.
