Hello,
I'm relatively new to Photoshop so if you know how to do this, please explain by telling me where I click. E.g. File>Open
Does anyone know how I would achieve this exact effect in Photoshop in the image above (without the circular logo)? The 2 light blue type of effects, one at the top of the image, the one at the bottom of the image. I don't know how to achieve this effect, please show me if you know how. I'm using Photoshop CS5.
I have looked through hundreds of tutorials, none provide me any clue as to how this is achieved.
Or does anyone know a tutorial on how this effect is achieved?
Thank you for your help.
Sorry, I had to sleep.
I just created a solid blue canvas then painted over it with a soft brush set to a very low flow and set to Linear Dodge and later Lighten, and painted in the highlights. Sometimes low tech can be the answer for a one-off project.
It can help to work at a size larger than your final needs, then downsample the image later.
It's possible the Layer styles could be used to help achieve this - it does have some aspects of a soft inner bevel.

Hey again,
Thanks for your help, I'm sort of a beginner in Photoshop.
Would you be able to show me how you set a 'very low flow', and what do you set to 'linear dodge'? How do you lighten it and paint in the highlights?
Could you show me a bit more of how you achieved it? I've been trying forever ![]()
Teaching you Photoshop from the ground up far exceeds what can be accomplished (or expected) within the scope of a user to user forum.
If you can't follow the instructions you have been given, you have a lot of reading and studying to do.
Photoshop is a professional level application that makes no apologies for its long and steep learning curve.
Try the video tutorials at lynda.com, or a book such as "Photoshop Classroom in a Book", etc. Also Google for tutorials Photoshop. Take a class at your local community college.
Hello,
I appreciate your insightful comment, however I'm not asking to be taught Photoshop from the ground up, where did I say that in my post? I can't quite see where I requested that, sorry if I can't see, please show me.
Secondly, I have scoured the Internet and I've already seen hundreds of 'button' tutorials, yet none give me anything close to what I need done. The image above doesn't use gradients, which 99.999% of the 'button' tutorials use.
I only came here as a final resort, please understand. The time taken writing your post, you could have answered my questions.

Sure. In post #6, you wrote:

Anyone who has to ask those basic questions needs to learn Photoshop from the ground up. If not, you would have been able to follow Noel Carboni's directions right away, with no trouble. There's a minimum due diligence expected from all of us. In this case, you can start by reading up on the Brush tool in the Photoshop Help files.
Please understand that I'm not putting you down. I'm pointing out that you have a lot of learning to do, and I made some suggestions as to where to start.
Incidentally, your confrontational attitude is not helpful to you. The last line of your post #2 is insulting to the poster who had just offered you help.
The tone of your post #8 required some restraint on my part before I could compose post #9.
Please read this FAQ for advice on how to ask your questions:

Thanks!
Hello,
I know how to use the brush tool, I just needed to achieve the desired effect as in my first image, it just can't turn out the way I want it.
Also, please understand that I don't have many hours in the day, I have a 9-5 and I come home exhausted, so I can't sit in front of the computer and 'learn Photoshop'. I only have 1 free hour per day, sometimes less, Photoshop is a new hobby for me. But I get all excited when I see a nice graphic, and I want to make something similar, hope you understand.
I just needed Noel Carboni's post to be a little more descriptive, that's all. I'm sorry for your double post, I don't understand why they were needed, it still doesn't help me, sorry about that, but it's just the truth ![]()
Can't an innocent person just ask for help online without being ridiculed? If help is available, why not? Far out.
Could someone else elaborate just a touch on Noel Carboni's helpful post? That's all that I need, thank you.
Yes, it would have been faster and more constructive to point out exactly where to find information rather than scold you.
Check out the Option bar that one gets under the Menu bar. If it is not showing, go to windows>Options.

If you select the brush tool, you will notice a flow value, that you can lower; and a Mode drop down list.

Set the mode to Linear Dodge, then for the next stroke set it to lighten.
