I am looking to purchase a new printer that will produce high quality prints from Illustrator.
I am going to be using the printer for stationery, so it needs to be able to print cardstock.
Thank you so much.
christinamaria,
You may read a bit about it here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PostScript
And what Larry said.
There are cheaper printers with PostScript emulation.
If you can't afford a $1k-$2k color printer, you're better off just finding an online vendor to print stationary. Once you use a vendor a few times you often get classified as a "VIP" and save even more money by using them. They'll do small runs at reasonable prices. And the money you spend on online vendors will generally be much less than the cost of inks for a "less expensive" color printer.
