one way would be to search your whole harddisks for :  Lightroom 4 Catalog.lrcat   or *.lrcat files.

but it has a good side.... im sure you will care more about backups in the future.

it´s essential to have a good backup strategy!

i also write all changes into the images itself.
it gives me some piece of mind that i know all the important changes are stored in the files.

in the unlikely case that my catalog and the 4 backups (on different harddisks and different systems) are all corrupt,  i still have the edits in the image files

When you say you can't find the last backup, do you remember letting it run?  The most effective solution will be to find the backup, so searching your computer for *.lrcat would be a good place to start.

If that doesn't work, there's a chance we can start a clean catalog and pull data into it from the corrupted catalog, but knowing your operating system would help.

Don't worry, Steve, it is the catalog file and not your LR installation, which is corrupted.

LR just does not open, because you may have set it to always use the last catalog.

If you find a non-corrupted backup lrcat-file, you can doubleclick it and it will open.

That is in fact how you find out if an lrcat-file is ok or corrupted.

You can also start a new catalog? Just hold down the ctrl-key on Windows (opt key on Mac) while opening LR. This gives you a dialog box whe you can choose so.

    Good luck,

    Cornelia
