Acrobat 8 Pro won't let me save over files

May 16, 2012 3:23 AM

This is just really bugging me - I work in Indesign CS5 and save file as a pdf. I open pdf too check ok and email to client. Then when I amend my Indesign file and resave over that pdf I get this message everytime:

Cannot save to the file "XXX" You may not have permission or the file may be in use.

And consequently, I have to go into the folder and delete it before I can save. It's not in use, it's definitely closed!

Does anyone else have this problem?

Sometimes you have to be sure that Acrobat is closed or Windows continues to think the file is open. Look in the task list and see if Acrobat is still in memory.

Same here Suzie - on my Mac all I'm doing is creating a simple PDF from ID. When I alter it and export as PDF, saving to the desktop to overwrite the previous version it goes through the motions - then up comes this message.

If Bill is assuming correctly that you're on Windows then its a Mac OSX problem too.

Acrobat is dormant here - only ID open.

I had the same problem, then tried changing the view in windows explorer so that it doesn't show a preview (pane on right-hand side). It worked! I suspect enough of the document is actually 'open' when shown in this preview pane to prevent changes being saved.
