Can Illustrator update placed text files?

Aug 17, 2012 11:15 AM

I'm trying to streamline my employers horrible workflow. We create labels for products that we package, and certain parts of the labels need to be updated as regulations change. Using InDesign, I can place and link text files that will call for an update when the master file is updated. In Illustator, when I place a text file, either .doc or .txt, I don't see a way to link that placed text. If I do the same with a pdf, I can link it and Illstrator will call for an update. But, printing the Word file to a pdf is an extra step that I would like to avoid if possible.

Does Illustrator CS6 have this feature? If not, is there a plugin or something that will allow for this functionality?

I would use InDesign, but we have hundreds of labels already created in Corel Draw/Illustrator, and while those two can work together pretty well, going to InDesign will require a lot more time to migrate over.

Thanks for any help!

You need to look into variable data within Illustrator.

If you set up test as variables, then it can update.

The help files include step by step instructions on using variables within Illustrator.
