I'm trying to streamline my employers horrible workflow. We create labels for products that we package, and certain parts of the labels need to be updated as regulations change. Using InDesign, I can place and link text files that will call for an update when the master file is updated. In Illustator, when I place a text file, either .doc or .txt, I don't see a way to link that placed text. If I do the same with a pdf, I can link it and Illstrator will call for an update. But, printing the Word file to a pdf is an extra step that I would like to avoid if possible.
Does Illustrator CS6 have this feature? If not, is there a plugin or something that will allow for this functionality?
I would use InDesign, but we have hundreds of labels already created in Corel Draw/Illustrator, and while those two can work together pretty well, going to InDesign will require a lot more time to migrate over.
Thanks for any help!
You need to look into variable data within Illustrator.
If you set up test as variables, then it can update.
The help files include step by step instructions on using variables within Illustrator.
Yes it is possible but not that way...
Rather than have a simple text linked to your template you'll have one Ai file linked to all your Ai files. Main advantage to this way is that you may control all the formating and all the effects that you may have apply to the texts in ONE file!
You have to split the approved Ai file (the original file) into multiple layout LINKED components and than link place them back into your template. Like you do it with linked image files.
Eg: create Ai file containing the text & link place it into your Ai template... When you change text into the first Ai file all files linked to that text will update...
NOTE! you may use complex layout combinations (eg: layout file containing the main design, text files, logo files, image files) but I advice you to use them on different layers for in some cases you may option NOT to use the "print" option for some layers for not placing that layer into the final output file (eg: guide layers)
Maybe take a look at the plugin Copy Flow Gold - athough it's advertised for translations, you can use it for any text updates.
