Hello,
I installed 10.1.4 last night and when I got to work this morning I found that ll users who had Fujitsu scanners (TWAIN) were unable to scan. The latest TWAIN drivers are installed. When a users selectes Create PDF From Scanner (any type B&W / Grayscale / ETC) the document is scanned but then the app just hangs. Sometime you are prompted to add more pages othertimes not. When you are and slect no mor pages the app goes into never land. The only way out is to end the process in task manager. Completely uninstall and moving back to 10.1.3 fixes the issue. This is on Windows 7 (x64) SP1, Acrobat 10.1.4 Professional.
What could be the problem?
thanks,
mitch
Can you please share a couple of information with us:
1: Twain log: This log is placed in your temp folder. Please follow the following steps to generate the log:
a) Execute the erroneous Scan workflow.
b) Open any Windows Explorer window and type "%temp%" in the address bar. Then browse for file twain.log
Share this file with us.
2: List of all the scanners installed on the machines on which issue is reproduced.
I would like to inform you that we too are trying to replicate the issue at our end. So far we have tried with Fujitsu fi 6130 and Fujitsu fi 5220C but we could not reproduce the issue on it.
Thank you very much for the answer. I feel a bit better about it, and I will gladly comply. As I can't figure out how to add an attachment, I will simply post it below.

Thanks for the tip, but it's difficult for me to understand exactly what this would do?
My scanner is working correctly in other programs, so Windows 7 obviously has it correctly detected, installed, and has the right drivers for it. I don't know whether Adobe Acrobat has its own drivers for scanners, but I can't imagine that 10.1.4 would require different drivers?
Do you have a theory as to why this would work?
Thank you!
I cannot speculate why this would work. My experience is that data used by the scanner's driver can become corrupted. Unplugging the power and USB cable and reconnecting them somehow might reset the driver's data. It has worked for me in the past.
In any case, IMHO, you have nothing to lose by trying it. No guarantees. ![]()

Thanks!
That *is* useful. Something things work in Windows just by a reboot, or a reinstall of a device; but, in this particular case I was fooled because the scanner appears to be working in other programs.
I do realize this is a "no risk" solution," but I always like to look for "understanding solutions" where I can find them. The fact that this has worked for you in the past is extremely helpful.
I think I will try removing the Canon 5600F in Device Manager and then rebooting first. If that doesn't fix it, I will try your solution.
The scanner just started to work again. I have *no* idea what changed.
I didn't even turn it off nor did I remove it in device manager. Something doesn't quite add up.
Thanks everybody for the help. Let's hope it keeps working! ![]()
Thank again for the response.
I have the same problem with an Epson perforection 3490 scanner. Acrobat 10.1.4 was installed and it seemed like it would not scan. I reinstalled the scanner drivers (obtained the newest from Epson), no change. I found out that if I left Adobe running long enough, the scan would complete. It takes about 3 minutes. I have used Adobe Acrobat as part of Creative Suite for years (now CS 6) with no problems. Now I have had two, Acrobat not starting after 30 days and the inabilty to scan. Please correct this. Both are unresolved after owning CS6 for 90 days.
I have a similar problem with Acrobat Pro update 10.1.4 with a Canon DR-7580 scanner. Acrobat "hangs" at two separate points in the scanning process. One is for about a minute, and the other is for about 2-3 minutes. Everything worked fine before this update a day ago. The scanner has the latest drivers. It seems like there is some conflict that was created by update 10.1.4 of Acrobat Pro. I would go back to version 10.1.3, but I am not sure how to do that. I don't think there is a way to uninstall just the most recent of updates. I guess I could uninstall Acrobat Pro X completely, and then reinstall from the CD. That would give me the initial version 10 without any incremental updates. But if I then checked for updates, it would probably give me 10.1.4 rather than letting me choose 10.1.3. This seems to be a problem that is happening to more than an isolated few. The update has only been out for a few days. I first noticed it yesterday.
It sounds like you work for Adobe and deal with Acrobat issues. Am I correct?
I posted information about this same problem.
That previous version worked fine. I had no complaints about it. I don't know how 10.1.4 was intended to be better, but for now it has basically disabled Acrobat Pro X for me.
What is the easiest way to get back to the version of Acrobat Pro that preceded 10.1.4? That would be the most useful information that can be provided to us right now to get us back up and running.
I'm sorry to report that when I tried to scan a second document Acrobat 10.1.4 didn't work again.
Removing the scanner in Device Manager and then rebooting and having Windows reload the drivers does fix the issue, at least for the first scan. I have not tried two scans with a single use of this technique. Perhaps a reboot after every scan would also work?
I remain convinced there is a bug in 10.1.4 because I have never experienced an issue like this with any prior versions nor updates.
Good luck in resolving this!
Yes, I have had to go back to 10.1.3. I am an IT manager respobsile for a number of systems where scanners and Adobe have become business as usual. The only way to go back to 10.1.3 is to uninstall the entire app and then reload. Doing this does fix the issue. My issue is that 10.1.4 addresses a number of security issues. So now I have a delima. Leave 10.1.3 installed on the machine and risk the possibility of a security breach, go to 10.1.4 to close the security hole and disable business functions, or look at another PDF solution. I'm looking for another product. I am very tired of Adobe releasing a new patch for something their programmers are incompent to fix. Just look at home many times flash has been patched in the last 6 months! Time for Adobe to hire a new programming team or send the current one back to Computer Scienece 101. My two cents!

I know that this post will not be encouraging to many having this problem. Yet, I want to share my experience with y'all anyway.
I have scanned several documents with Acrobat X Pro 10.1.4 and have had no problems after doing what follows next. The first time I tried was not successful. I unplugged my Epson V30 scanner's power and USB cables and plugged them back in. Then everything all worked normally.
I suspect that my scanner's Twain drivers had become corrupted somehow and repaired when I did what I said. System: Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1 with latest maintainance applied. I also have Norton 360 V6, which is fully patched.
I also have sometimes found that restarting Windows after applying Acrobat maintenance solves many problems even though the Adobe maintenance does not suggest taking that step. BTW, when I applied 10.1.4 for Reader X, the updating software asked that I restart Windows.
Two suggestions come to mind. The Windows registry can become corrupted. I frequently run Nortons' registry clean up process as a preventative measure. I also delete temporary internet and windows files every day.
I hope this helps. ![]()

I got things running properly again by uninstalling Acrobat X Pro completely, and then reinstalling Acrobat X Pro from the CD.
A few points:
1. Doing this puts me back to running version 10.0.0. I don't see a way to get to 10.1.3. MitchDW said that he uninstalled, and then got back to 10.1.3. I don't see an option for updating from 10.0.0 only up to 10.1.3. It looks like the updating process is designed to go to the latest update from Adobe, which is 10.1.4. You can't just downgrade version 10.1.4 to 10.1.3, and when you uninstall and start over with version 10.0.0., I think you have to go all the way back up to version 10.1.4, which I obviously don't want since that is where the problem exists.
I also looked on my PC to see if there was a saved file for the earlier update to 10.1.3. I save update files on my hard drive if given that option in the installation process. I don't remember that as an option, and I did not see a file for the 10.1.3 update on my hard drive where I would have saved it if it had been offered as an option to save it.
So, if someone has found a way to get to 10.1.3, please post it and let me know.
2. I tried doing some things with my Canon DR-7580 scanner, but nothing there fixed the problem that appeared when Acrobat version 10.1.4 was installed. Turning off power, and back on didn't help. Disconnecting the USB cable and reconnecting it didn't help. Restarting my PC did not help. I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, but I don't know that any version of Windows is a factor here. Disconnecting a scanner's USB cable and then reconnecting it apparently worked for some people posting here, but it did not work for me. My Canon drivers are all up to date too.
From the combination of things that I looked at and tried, and from the results, I concluded that I had isolated the problem to be in Acrobat version 10.1.4. That is for my installation and PC. Other people might have different results and conclusions.
Have you tried uninstalling your scanner in Device Manager and then allowing Windows to redetect it upon reboot *each* time you do a scan?
I realize that is an awful pain but my, totally uneducated, theory is that this has something to do with the transport of the scanned file to Windows. I say this because the scan works fine but it never gets translated to Windows so I can view it. When I pull up Task Manager I do find out that Adobe Acrobat 10.1.4 has scanned the image but it is "Waiting for a response from the user." However, I cannot find the Window to give it a response.
This is *not* a a valid solution, but it would enable you to run 10.1.4 without having to reinstall to 10.0.
I hope this helps.
I didn't try going to Device Manager. When comments from others made it look like uninstalling and then reinstalling Acrobat X would get it working again, I decided to try that. I generally do things first that involve the least complexity and that are within my range of experience and expertise. Then I go step by step beyond that on an as needed basis until finding the first thing that works.
My conclusion at this point is that Adobe needs to fix version 10.1.4. I think that will take at least several days if not weeks.
I can now scan as I could before version 10.1.4, so I am content for now.
Sorry, should have explained that better. I have installers configured to apply the required patches to get back to 10.1.3. So, if you install off of the DVD or whatever medium you will be at 10.0. Then go to:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1&platform= Windows
Download the patches you need to get back up to 10.1.3. For example if you are at 10.0 you will need:
10.0.1
10.0.2
10.0.3
10.1.0
10.1.1
10.1.2
10.1.3
You can chain the patches together or just install one at a time. Remember NEVER go to Help / Check for Updates as this will ALWAYS give you the latest which is 10.1.4.
-mitch
I also started having the problem on the 15th right after the update. I find that the scanner ( Canon MF 4150) hangs on the last page if there are more than one and if I wait- last time it was 14 minutes - it completes, but if I try to cancel it comes up saying the scanner is still scanning ( which it is not) and it wont let you cancel the program, unoess you use the task manager and end the process. I have tried a system restore going back to 10.1.3 but the problem still persisted so whatever 10.1.4 did - it really did it good.
But maybe a system restore is not as good as an uninstall and reverting back to 10.1.3 manually.
In the meantime I am using the Canon software to scan but I want my Acrobat 10 back! It worked so well until that darn update. I hope that a new update comes along very quickly as now this expensive program is useless.
I tried all the ideas that were mentioned abpve but have not unistalled program and revert back to 10. That is not a very worthy fix!
I need this program daily and it is very frustrating.

One fairly easy solution (if others don't work, as they didn't for me) is to uninstall Acrobat, then reinstall it from your CD for version X, which will give you version 10.0, which was fine for me. Then, to update part way to 10.1.4 but not actually to do 10.1.4, follow the steps in the most recent post by MitchDW. Go to that web page, and get whichever updates you want. Don't get 10.1.4, and don't let Acrobat update itself for now, because it will install 10.1.4 and put you back in trouble. In Preferences, I deactivated the part about checking for updates. For now, I will check manually until the next update comes out.
Hmmm.. I thought I had the same issue, but it seems to be a bit more complicated.
Yes, we are very much following all the posts and we regret for the problems encountered by you all. We always work for the betterment of the product but at times some fixes backfire. We thank all the people who are sharing their twain logs for our investigation. We will try and come up soon with a workaround.jmegas wrote:
That TWAIN communication issue seems consistent with what I am experiencing.
I hope Adobe is following these posts.
OK, please get something that addresses this issue ASAP.
I also have the same problem as some of the people earlier in this thread, trying to Scan to PDF from with Acrobat X - 10.1.4, using an HP Photosmart C7280. I am running W7-64. The Acrobat options I am using are WIA-based, plus 'native scanner interface' using the Custom Scan.
The prior version (10.1.3) was fine - now it hangs halfway through a scan, and doesn't remember that you are doing duplex in some cases. If you wait long enough, it does eventually work in some cases, but not all. It also seems to respond from its hung state by starting up other applications, suggesting some kind of memory conflict is in play?
Incidentally, the dialogue box for page size on Custom Scan still comes up behind the main Acrobat window on 10.1.4 as it did on 10.1.3 (early versions were OK) - will there ever be a fix for this, or will the user always need to 'toggle' the windows to get to it?
I tried a "repair" (option shown after clicking Change in Add/Remove Programs for Acrobat) on a few clients here and it didn't help.
But if I logged on as a different user to the same computer I didn't have the problem. So I tried deleting the Acrobat settings from the affected profile and it seems to be working for us.
On Windows XP, I deleted the following folders:
C:\Documents and Settings\<profile name>\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat
C:\Documents and Settings\<profile name>\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe PDF
C:\Documents and Settings\<profile name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat
On Windows 7, I deleted:
C:\Users\<profile name>\AppData\Local\Adobe\Acrobat
C:\Users\<profile name>\AppData\LocalLow\Adobe\Acrobat
C:\Users\<profile name>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Acrobat
C:\Users\<profile name>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe PDF
The common element here seems to be the 10.1.4 update to Acrobat. That caused problems with a variety of scanners and a variety of Operating Systems. What worked for me, and seems to be a universal cure, is to uninstall version 10.1.4, and then install 10.0.0 from the CD or DVD. That fixed things for me, and I think for everyone else who went through those steps. I then also incrementally installed the updates using the URL and instructions from MitchDW above in his most recent post. So that put me back to where I was before I got the infamous 10.1.4 update. I am happy, and it is working as before. I don't have whatever changes were included in version 10.1.4, but I don't care. I was not having problems with 10.1.3.
Regarding what EnginesRob said about the scanning dialog box appearing behind the window for Acrobat, for me it appears off to the left side. But I have a 24" monitor, and I do not have the Acrobat window filling the screen. There is blank space to the left and right of it on my display, and the dialog boxes appear over there. You might want to resize some windows, and drag the dialog box off to the side of the main Acrobat window if you have trouble seeing it.
Congratulations!
However, lets hope it *continues* to work. I had thought that removing my scanner in Device Manager and then redetecting it would make it work because it did once. Unfortunately Acrobat 10.1.4 is not working again, so it was a fluke fix.
I genuinely hope your fix is a permanent one, but I am skeptical at this point.
Please report back, as your findings would be useful to many of us.
Since I have things working again now, I am not going to play around with drivers, Device Manager, etc. I think the problem is with the 10.1.4 update and how it interacts with scanners, drivers, etc. In short, it has a bug. Adobe needs to fix it. I am going to manually check for updates periodically and see when there is one that is higher than version 10.1.4 and of a later date. Hopefully that will include a fix of these problems. If it doesn't, I at least now know how to get back to version 10.1.3.
I might as well jump on board. I have an Epson GT-S50 that I have been using for a few months with Acrobat 9 and then X, scanning to PDF using Paperport Pro 14 and the TWAIN driver. My post-update problem sounds a bit different than others. When I open the scanned document in Acrobat, by default it fills the window on my 23" monitor at 150+%, I get an "insufficient data for an image" message dialog with a blank window behind it. If I reduce the view to 125% or less, the image pops into view normally. The files will print normally. As soon as I zoom in at 150% the "insufficient data..." message appears. Scans viewed now that were made prior to the 10.1.4 update view normally at all zoom levels. Only post update scans are affected on my machine. Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. Acrobat X installed as part of the CS6 Design Premium suite.
I also have a Brother 7860 Multifunction connected. Scans generated using its TWAIN driver have the exact same display issue as the Epson scans at zoom levels 150% or higher with normal viewing below 150%.
