Lightroom 4 hangs on import

I just installed Lightroom 4 on my Windows 7 computer, but I am having problems with it:

 

When I start the program and click on the import button in the lower left corner, the program is busy for about one minute and then I get the message from Windows that the program encountered an error and needs to close. Sometimes the screen changes before the error message and displays "Quelle wählen" (it is the german version of LR. translation "select source") in the upper left corner.

 

I get this behaviour on every start of Lightroom. I tried already several times to reinstall Lightroom and before the last reinstall, I carefully removed all Lightroom references on my hard disk.

 

 

I have installed Lightroom 4.1 64 bit.

 

My computer is running Windows 7 Ultimate SP 1, has 4 GB RAM, AMD Athlon DualCore 4250e processor. There is 35 GB free diskspace on C: (SDD) and 80 GB on E: (mechanical harddisk).

 

The FAQ says: "What other software are you running?". I am not sure, what is interesting here. I am using Microsoft Office, Firefox, Thunderbrid, Norton 360° Antivirus and the NEC Spectraview Software.

    Just saw, that I am having the same problem with Photoshop Elements 8.0. When I choose download from camera or card reader, it is updating the device list for about one minute, before the problem is closed with the following error:

    Are you importing from:

     

    Disk?

    A camera connected directly?

    A card reader?

    In Lightroom, I was trying to import from an existing folder with raw files on my hard disk. However, I did not even get to the point where I could choose from which source to import.

    This may seem like an absurd question but how many icons aer on your desktop?

    At this point, Tom, I would recommend renaming your Preferences file with Lightroom closed and then reopen Lightroom and let it rebuild the file.

    "The preferences file is Lightroom 4 Preferences.agprefs, located in


    Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Lightroom/Preferences/."

     

    These folders are hidden by default and you may have to enable their view in Win 7

     

    Let us know if this works, please.

    Hey, that made it create a new catalog from my existing Photoshop Elements catalog and for the first time I am seeing pictures in Lightroom. However, unfortunately, the import button still shows the same behaviour.

    Well I don't know if that is good or bad... 

     

    A couple of things to test.

     

    Can you access Import via the File menu?

    Can you drag files that are not currently in Lightroom into the Grid View of Library and invoke Import?

    Those two also give me the hourglass for about one minute, before the program crashes. The last one, before it crashed showed me the Choose Source view.

     

    I also tried the following:

     

    Click on the plus sign for adding a folder in the left pane:

    That gave me a dialog, where I could choose a folder to import. After having done that, again the same behaviour: hourglass and crash.

    The next two things I would try are:

     

    1. Rebuild the preferences file by renaming the current preferences file to a different name while Lightroom is closed. When you reopen Lightroom, it will rebuild the preferences file. (http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/preference-file-locations-lightroo m-4.html)

     

    2. Reinstall Lightroom.

    Hi Rikk,

     

    Thanks for your reply. Just to be shure, you mean:

     

    a)

    1. rename the preference file

    2. reopen lightroom to get the preference file rebuilt

    3. reinstall Lightroom

     

    or

     

    b)

    1. rename the preference file

    2. reinstall Lightroom

    3. Open Lightroom to get the preference file rebuilt

    c)

    1. rename the preference file

    2. reopen lightroom to get the preference file rebuilt

    Test and see if it works. If it doesn't proceed to step 3

     

    3. reinstall Lightroom

    Still the same behaviour. I also tried to explicitly install the 32 bit version, but it would not help.

    What's connected to your computer?  Printers, phones, network storage, cloud storage, other computers, anything like that?

    Great, can you try disconnection a few of those just to try to narrow it down.  I'd particularly be looking at the 2 printers, the Nokia and the Skydrive as the main suspects.  We've seen issues with phones and cloud drives in the past, so they're definitely worth a shot.

    Hi Victoria,

     

    It was the ServiceLayer process belonging to the Nokia Suite. Unfortunately, I cannot connect my phone without this process running. At least, I can now start evaluating Lightroom. Thank you so much for your help.
