I'm running LR4.1 on Macbook Pro OS X 10.6.8, monitor is calibrated with Spyder3Elite.
I was working on a photo in LR4 and I made adjustments in Develop module until it looks good to me. I exported the RAW file to JPEG with sRGB color profile and applied Standard Sharpening for screen. Here's how it looks:
Left side is LR4 Develop module, Right side is Mac Preview, Soft proofed to my monitor color profile.
I have no problem with the color on both applications and I have given up on the amount of noise that is significantly magnified (even exporting without sharpening gives so much more noise than Develop module displays...
) but look at those stars!!
How come the export shows SO many stars while LR4 Develop module sorta "hides" them? The look on Library module is closer to the exports when it comes to the stars only, but the absence of NR makes it way too horrible to look at longer than a second ![]()
Am I doing anything wrong here?
While I understand 1:1 view gives a more accurate preview, staring at a 24MP photo in 1:1 really doesn't help me to see how much noise is visible when the image is downsized to 900x900 pixels viewed on screen. It's not like LR4 isn't capable of showing it as Library module shows all the stars as exported + all the noise that are reduced in Develop module.
I played around with NR and when NR is bumped to around 60-70ish, the export shows much less noise, closer to what I want to achieve (what Develop module shows when NR is around 20ish). With NR at 60-70ish, Develop module shows a very soft blurry image but export file comes out fine ![]()
Not sure about LR4, but in LR3, noise reduction and sharpening were not always applied in develop module except at 1:1 zoom. I don't know if that's still the case, but it fits with what you are describing.
The logic: images rendered faster without having to do NR, and you can't really judge noise and sharpening except at 1:1. In Library module, images are rendered only once (until you edit the image again) so rendering time is not such an issue.

LR4 does now apply NR in Develop module at lower zoom's, but it's not that accurate, particularly at higher sliders values.

I can't double check this right now - it may have changed - but if you zoom into 1:1 in Library, the Library Fit view will then have the NR applied and look much more like the exported version. Just try it and let me know, or I'll double check it later.
I zoomed in to 1:1 in Library, waited a while for it to load all the settings, then zoomed out back to Fit view and it does show what the export looks like. Inefficient... but solved the problem. I wish it works better than having to switch back and forth between module and zoom in and out but oh well... maybe LR5 will have a better workflow. Thanks Victoria! ![]()
Excellent! It's only usually an issue when you have unusually high noise reduction or sharpening settings, but it's a handy workaround to have up your sleeve for those occasions. If you have a batch of them, you don't need to go through manually zooming in Library - just to go Library menu > Previews > Render 1:1 Previews to get the same result.
