FMLE doesn't detect video camera

We just purchased a new laptop to do live streaming.  After installing FMLE I noticed that it only detects the webcam on the laptop.  On our desktop I installed an hdmi card and was able to connect the video camera to that to show video.  But when I connect the video camera to the laptop with the same hdmi cable that I use on the desktop, it doesn't detect anything and FMLE only shows webcam as video device.  Am I missing a step somewhere?  Thanks for any help and i hope I explained it in enough detail what I am trying to do!
