Hello, i am editing in photshop 7 but when i download my images from my camera when i shoot in RAW and can not edit the images in photoshop 7 why?? I would like to download and edit in RAW not have to convert back to jpeg once on my computer. Does thsi happen to anyone else or ami missing something?
Photoshop 7 had a optional camera raw plugin that cost extra, but that wouldn't open any newer camera raw files or dng files.
If you want to stick with photoshop 7, you would need to use the camera raw utility that the camera maker provides or an aftermarket one.
Or consider photoshop elements 10 for your raw conversions or purchase photoshop cs6 or lightroom 4.
If you convert the files you probably want to use the tif format instead of jpeg.
What camera do you have?
Just to be clear your talking about photoshop 7 and not photoshop elements 7?
If i purchase photoshop elements 10 will my actions trasnsfer over to the 10 version or how would i do that? I enjoy elements, is there quite a difference between elements and photoshop? Does Version 10 has a RAW plug in that comes with the version, and is it easy to set up or is this already something set up? Whats the difference between a tif. file and a jpeg.? Sorry for all the questions i just want to learn more.
The differences between PS and PSElements is not THAT big, but there are many operations in PSE, that are automated, or semi-automated, where in PS, one would do those by hand, but with much more control.
The biggest things missing completely from PSE are:
CMYK support (only needed if doing work for commercial printing in CMYK inks)
No capability to create Layer Sets (often used in DVD/BD Menus), though it can edit them
Some of the Adjustment Layer functions
As you have Photoshop Elements, and also a question on PSE Actions, I will move this thread to the Photoshop Elements Forum, where you can get quick answers on the PSE Actions.
Good luck,
Hunt
If you update pse 7 to the 5.6 camera raw plugin then you should be able to open your camera raw files:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4626
If you wanted to get a newer version of elements, i'd probably wait for pse 11, which is due out within the next couple months
and you'd have to manually transfer your and actions (install) into the newer version of photoshop elements.
If your happy with photoshop elements 7, there is really no reason to get a newer version.
Jpegs use lossely compression which might result in loss of some data, where as tif won't have any data loss, but the file sizes are bigger.
In other words jpegs are good for posting images on the web/email and tifs and psds are good for saving a file that you may want to edit later.
corrected the link for the 5.6 camera raw plugin

There is no need to update PSE7
If you shoot raw simply download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your original raw’s as backups and for use in your camear manufacturwrs software)
Windows download click here DNG Converter 7.1
Mac download click here DNG Converter 7.1
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:
You Tube click here for DNG Converter tutorial
Did you install the 5.6 raw plugin and the profiles?
What happened when you tried to open one of your camera raw files?
If the plugin and profiles are installed correctly, your 5D MARK 11 files
should open directly into to photoshop elements 7 using File>Open in the photoshop elements 7 editor.
Here are the directions for installing the 5.6 camera raw plugin:
http://www.adobe.com/special/photoshop/camera_raw/Camera_Raw_5.6_ReadM e.pdf
Okay so you copied the camera plugin or moved the new camera 5.6 plugin to this folder and replaced the old one:
(if i remember right there is also a folder in the download marked 64 bit, you don't want that plugin, but the one outside that folder next to the profile installer)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 7.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats
If your vista system is not a 64 bit system, then the path would be
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 7.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats
