I'm not quite sure if this is the proper forum to post this question since it's about SEO for a web site. But I thought I'd give her a try...
I have a website and I want it to be higher up in the rankings... I know this is probably a daily on-going battle between web sites but I'm not having a ton of luck trying to bump the site up a little bit.
I've organized the keywords, descriptions, title but the tool from my hosting company is telling me it's only about a 6.5 out of 10. Still too low. What do the search engines look for exactly? It's almost as if the keywords meta tags are a waste because google just skips right over it and selects something from the content. If someone could just point me in the right direction on where to go for more information about search engine optimization it would be much appreciated.
Search Engine Optimization is a tricky beast to tackle. There's all different ways to improve your site's appearance on search engines. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that Search Engines want to provide their users with relevant content. The way they decide if a website has relevant content to it's users is how much traffic the website gets, and how many users (when searching for a specific search term) choose your website as the site with the content that was relevant to their search.
I'm not sure what hosting company you are using or what tool they provide, but I would highly suggest using an analytics software. There's lots of different softwares out there, and Adobe offers the Digital Marketing Suite which you can inquire about here:
Another analytics software that a lot of users tend to use is Google Analytics which has a free version as well as a premium version both with different features.
That being said, it's important to also take in to account Search Engine Marketing. Improving upon the ways that users can find your website through social media will help. It will greatly improve the traffic on your site to put in the hours it takes to make your site visible to users. A lot of people do this through blogging, Twitter, and Facebook accounts. There's a tool I sometimes use called Hubspot marketing grader. You have to pay for the premium service, but they do have a grading report that you can use for free.
Also, make sure that you submit your sites to the top search engines. If you just search (ironic I know) "Submit website to Google" "Submit website to Yahoo" etc, you can find the forms for submitting your site to the search engine. There's lots of little things you can do like adding alt tags to your images, cutting back on images as a much as possible (to decrease load time) and more.
Sorry for the long post, but there really is so much that can be said about SEO. It'd be nice to hear more suggestions from others to help you improve. : )
I hope this helps! Good luck!
What type of website hosting company do you have? This can be very important to the search engines. Free website hosting is usually bad for search engine rankings, for several reasons.

In a nutshell:
#1 Content is king. Meta keywords are a waste of time.
#2 Use good semantic markup with keyword rich content inside <h..> tags. Google gives greater importance to <h..> than <p> or <li> tags. But don't overuse headings as this will have a negative effect. Typically, only one <h1> tag for page title or company name. Then use as many <h2> <h3> and <h4> tags as needed.
#3 Longevity matters. Older sites get higher SERP rankings. There's not much you can do except to register your domain name for 5 years instead of 1. And add some fresh, relevant content to your site every couple of weeks (blogging).
#4 Trade links with reputable sites in your field to bolster your site's credibility. Avoid link farms, they won't help you. Google gives greater importance to sites with backlinks from respected .edu, .org & .com sites.
#5 Buy Google Keyword Ads each month for the first year while the site develops interest from SEs.
You must Offer your visitors with helpful, relevant information and write contents that clearly and accurately describe your site. Always update your website with fresh, high-quality contents.
