How to "reverse-engineer" corner radius value?

Aug 30, 2012 9:15 AM

Is it possible to find the value of the corner radius of the rounded corners for a rectangle that was created with the Rounded Rectangle Tool?

This if for CS4.

Thanks.

Select the arc of one corner with the white arrow tool. copy/paste a duplicate arc. Measurement bar or Transform palate will give you the width/height, which assuming there was no rotation, is the value of the corner radius.

    Hope that make sense...

    sPretzel,

Are you sure nothing was done to the rounded rectangle, such as a change of width/height or an uneven scaling?

I suspect, as Jacob does, that the rounded corner box was scaled unevenly so that the width does not equal the height. No way to tell the original radius, I am afraid, so use which ever one is more pleasing. You can also pull a round circular box as a trial. Then use half the diametre.

I had mentioned rotation because if the arc was rotated, the demensions would not give the true radius.

    sPretzel,

The difference between H and W is around 0.001".

That is too much to be just the inherent accuracy (which is no more than about 0.001 pt), so something must have been done/gone awry.

You could also use the Effect>Convert to Shape>Rounded Rectangle (setting the Extra width/Height to 0). That would ensure that no change is made to the corner radius. You may Object>Expand Appearance at any time, to see the radius or to enable rotation and so on.
