Can't locate startup profiles, Illustrator CS6

We are using AD and network smb/cifs home folders and when you create a new document in Illustrator CS6 an error message appears "can't locate startup profiles" . please try after installin illustrator again". I can look in the folder at ~Library/Application support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS6/en_GB/New Document Profiles , and it is empty. I can replace the folder with a known working one and all is OK. This only happens with network home folders. If I create a local user and launch Illustrator then everything works as expected and there is no error message. Can this be fixed?
