I just upgraded from Lightroom 3 to 4. Every time I attempt to select photos using the star ratings the app locks up and never returns (I get the eternal, apple, rainbow spinning wheel.). I have a new MacBook Pro purchased in Jan 2012. All other applications continue to operate fine, which indicates this is an Adobe Lightroom issue to me.
I have re-installed the application from my orinial download. It seemed to work for about 3 seconds and then it locked up just like before. I let it run for 45 minutes (while I was waiting for Adobe help, that never came) and finally gave up.
The only way to get back into Lightroom is to Force Quit and start over. The good news is the Force Quit does not seem to cause any loss of work. The bad news is selecting the highest rated photos is a basic functionality that I depend on.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any thoughts on fixing it?
Hi Larry. It may be taking some time to churn through and check your previews cache, metadata status, etc. after upgrade. A lot of the early reported disappeared by themselves when LR was left to its own devices for some time.
If that's not it, there are a few other things we can try:
1. Trashing preferences - including the LR3 and any other old ones often does the trick.
2. Corrupted presets have been causing issues in some cases, so we could rule those out.
3. If it's not a big catalog and all of the photos are available, deleting and rebuilding the preview cache solves a multitude of weirdness.
And if none of that does the trick, we can explore a few other options. Would you like a hand with any of those steps?
Victoria,
Thank you for your response. It gives me hope! ![]()
I really appreciate your offer to help. I have not worked through a forum before but I am assuming you are an Adobe employee, right? It would not seem fair to ask for this much help from someone who was not an Adobe employee.
In any case I should try your first suggestion of letting LR run. I know I have let it run about an hour and I may have tried over night. At what point would you give up on that approach?
In answer to your question of size I just went to check it out and found it is 145 MB. I have lots of photos marked with 1 star that I plan to delete so I would really like to get the rating functional.
I also noticed eight sets of files that say:
Temporary Import Data - #.db and
Temporary Import Data - #.db-journal
I am wondering if they have anything to do with the problem?
This is a "Yes", I would like help.
Thank you!
Larry
No, I'm not on the payroll, but I'm really pleased to help.
The Temporary Import Data files - just check the dates they were created. If you have 8 of them, they may be quite old, in which case it's unlikely to be a factor. If they're that old, you can probably delete them or shift them into your backup folder.
Let's give up on letting it run if it's been going overnight, and let's try preference files first. I've added instructions to my knowledgebase here: http://members.lightroomqueen.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/Vie w/1148/198/how-do-i-delete-the-lightroom-preferences-file Move any preferences you can find in that location, even if they're for older LR versions.
Also, tell me exactly what you're doing when it locks up. Are you viewing Grid, or Loupe, or what? And does it lock up when you click a particular screen element (i.e. a star) or when you press a key, or what? And how many photos in the catalog too?
Victoria,
I moved all of the temporary files out of the way and tried again with no improvement as expected.
I found and moved the files "com.adobe.Lightroom4.plist" and "com.adobe.Lightroom3.plist" to a different folder with no improvement. I left behind the associated lock files, Should I have moved them too?
After moving the preferences files it locked up as soon as I selected Rated under Filter: (lower right) in the Develop screen.
Previously after a lock up and a Force Quit I would come into Develop and click once on one of the 5 stars that would filter photos > or = to X number of stars. The first selection would work but as soon as I made a second selection it would lock up. It also would lock up when I attempted to add a star to a photo using the numbers (as short cuts) on the keyboard. Curiously if I set the stars associated to a photo by using the mousepad and arrow it did not cause the problem. (Just checked and this still works.)
I have just over 14000 photos all of which are raw files in the 20-25MB size range.
Thanks again.
Larry
Hi Larry, sorry for the delay, I got caught up with another issue.
So just to clarify, if you DON'T select anything from the Filter pop-up, will it allow you to use the other filters? I'm wondering if perhaps your Filter Presets are corrupt.
Ok, next port of call, while I'm waiting to hear back on the possible preset - if you start a clean catalog (File menu > New Catalog) and just import a few photos, does that work without locking up?
Victoria,
When I go into the app the drop down box titled "Filter:" in the develop mode is set on "Filter No" so I cannot filter at all until I make a selection and doing so causes the issue.
I just tried creating a new catalog and it appears that locked it up as well. Although it has only run for a few minutes, so I will go plug it in to the wall and let it run for awhile.
I just wondered if I had used up all the space on the hard drive. I have used 593 GB out of 749 GB. Could that be part of the the issue?

Press the word filter to show the other options, or use the filters at the top of the grid view instead. Those presets are a definite suspect.
