magic wand tool problem

Aug 4, 2012 2:00 AM

I have placed a vector icon in Illustrator, it is a png file and the magic wand tool does not work at all.

I click the icon and in the fill icon in the bar left, I just see a question mark.

Any idea why might this happening?

    Dimitri,

Illy sees a raster image (almost) as you and I do: just a collection of pixels, so most of the tools will fail. You cannot catch individual (groups of) pixels.

No, Jacob is saying that a PNG file is a raster image file. There are no vector paths in that file. To get a vector version you will need to recreate it in Illustrator or save it from the original creating software in a vector format.
