Apple has already completely effed up Safari's browsing by killing the back arrow and is adding more iPhone nonsense to the Mac OS that no one with a real computer needs or wants.
Do not add these features to Photoshop, ever.
I supposedly paid for 10.8.1 at the App store and waited ALL NIGHT for it to download. When I revisited my computer there was a screen telling me to update, but there is no dmg file anywhere I can see. WTF, Apple? Have you gone completely nuts over there?
You don’t like having to remember and use unseen mouse gestures to control things that you used to be able to see and click on?
So far Adobe is still beholden to keyboard shortcuts so I doubt they’ll replace mouse-clicks with gestures anytime soon, unless they decide to release an Adobe Phone of some sort, or Photoshop runs well on a tablet computer, or the old guard dies off and is replaced by kids that grew up with smart phones and never used a PC or Mac.
Re Safari: can't you right-click on the toolbar, pick "Customize Toolbar..." and add a back arrow?
Because I'm still using Snow Leopard, I use "Mouse Gestures" Safari Extension that enables navigation with the middle mouse-button. For example, press button and drag left for "go back" and right for "go forward".
That's way more convenient and efficient than looking up to the toolbar then moving the mouse pointer to a little button and clicking.
There's another way to "go back" that's a heck of a lot more convenient than the back button in the toolbar. Right-click - about a millimetre from the mouse pointer is the word "Back".
Conroy 2009, you have no idea how bad Lion and Safari 6 are. Try them and weep.
In order to fix the back arrow, which works on some sites and not on others in a random manner, you have to go to Terrminal and enter a footlong unix command. Nothing can be done about the changes to the Safari narrow scroll bar. The URL locator box and the search box have been combined for no reason other than pissing me off.
I tried a friend's Lion, I just had to change the gestures for the three fingers slide to make back arrow in Safari.
As a matter of tact, I don't use the Safari Navigation arrows anymore since I'm so used to the back-slide. (and I would not mind using it in Photoshop for step back or undo/redo)
I did not notice it not working on certain sites. (But this is still Safari 5, I'll try 6 soon...)
With considerable fear in my heart gristle, I downloaded Mountain Lion (8.1) and installed it after SuperDupering my HD to an eSATA drive connected by Thunderbolt. I am now using Safari 6 in 10.8.1 and we'll see just how effed it is. The vertical scroll bar is still so narrow you can't click on it accurately the first time, The search box is still gone. Not sure yet whether the Back triangle works correctly, or if I still have to use History instead.
Gary, I think the detail that Lundberg hasn't mentioned is that s/he's referring to the backspace key on the keyboard, not the "go back" button on the toolbar.
Apparently, restoring the backspace navigation to Safari 6 is as simple as copying a wee command from a web page and pasting it into Terminal.
The vertical scroll bar is still so narrow you can't click on it accurately the first time, The search box is still gone...
You are not going to like the fix for the scroll bars: It is called the Magic Trackpad. Bite the bullet & get one, because it is the new Apple way. The scroll target goes from being too narrow, to being the whole window. Forgive me.
On the subject of the search box, I recommend you give the new unified search bar a chance. It really works amazingly well, and I was surprised how quickly I came to prefer it.
Oh, I almost forgot: the Magic Trackpad does the back button thing really well, too. A quick 2 fingered swipe to the right, and the page you are on slides over & is replaced by the previous page, all in glorious real-time animation.
I was not referring to the delete or backspace key. The Back triangle does not always work in Safari 6. There are at least two terminal command strings that purport to restore the function, one of which does nothing and I haven't tried the other. There is a BringBackDelete extension I downloaded that I have not yet installed because I never used that key for Back in the first place. Command+Shift+ left curly bracket works sometimes but not always when the back triangle is greyed out. The problem has something to do with being in a tab but tabs are soimething Safari and other browsers can't get right and they make my head hurt and then the voices start.
I use an old Microsoft two button and scroll wheel mouse that is held together with Scotch tape. It's like magic, that tape. So it's a magic mouse.
Dozens if not millions of users are very upset about the narrow scroll bar, the twitchyness and rapidity, and the dimwittedness of not being able to put things back the way they were . Thus always geekdom.
It's called BringBackDelete.safariextz, and it actually works. You just download it and it installs.
Apple will probably never fix the idiotic scrollbar problems. I don't think they care about desktop computing at all now and why should they?
I bought a flash drive and did the Recovery ASssistant thing, too. Pretty cool.
