Adobe Community: When exporting to PDF/X-3 from InDesign, why do my placed RGB images get converted to CMYK?

Sorry Peter, I've just realised that I had transparency in my layout. It looks like the RGB images were converted to CMYK when the transparency was flattened, because of exporting to PDF/X-3 (PDF 1.3).

I don't use the PDF/X-3 preset, but the transparency flattening space is controlled by ID in the Edit menu, not as part of the export process, per se.

I'd still like to know where you see the conversion. Are you looking at the Acrobat output preview? That is going to show you the values for the target space you select, so if you've chosen a CMYK profile the valuse will be CMYK, but if you choose an RGB space, you'll see only RGB numbers.

If you really don't want any conversions why not PDF/X-4?.

Adobe most strongly recommends use of PDF/X-4 export from InDesign (without conversion of any colors - the default for the PDF/X-4 joboptions) for the most reliable PDF publishing workflows!

I've never used the object inspector before, but I just tried it out with a mixed-mode PDF, and I see multiple images listed, not just the one I click on. Are you sure you're looking at the correct image?

Yes. Most definitely. With the object (image) selected, the inspector lists the ColorSpace (ICCBasedRGB, Adobe RGB (1998), as well as other image attributes.

With PDF/X-3 any page with a transparent object would be all CMYK if the transparency blend space is CMYK. An RGB blend space would stop the conversion, but then you'd have RGB text, which would eventually separate to 4-color. I can't see the advantage of X-3 over X-4
