You typed "hello" and expected it to change to "今日は" when you apply a 'Japanese' font?

... Illustrator can't translate text for you!

To get "Japanese text", you will actually have to type in Japanese. (Or copy from somewhere, as I did.)

    have you got any tips?

like, can I import each Japanese character somehow?

Copy, paste. That's what I did, from Google Translate. (But if you are seriously considering using Japanese text, do not use Google translate! Get your Japanese text from a real translator!)

silly questions, its impossible for me to type in Japanese, right?

No, theoretically it should be possible to set up your system to accept typed Japanese. But if you don't read the language, that won't help.

Just copy and paste your Japanese text into Ilustrator. If the text then shows the 'character unavailable' boxes, apply a font that does contain Japanese glyphs.

You can type in japanese by enabling tje japanese keyboard from the system preferences panel. Dont know exactly where but turn it on there. Once it is on, while in text edit mode up on the menu bar select the japanese flag and now when you type you will be typing in japanese

This is on mac os x tho. If you are on pc not sure how it works

I take it you are on a Mac

    System Preferences Language and Text

Select for the input source say Kotoeri

Then select a dialect and then you can use Type Using Kana Table as well

You nmust first have a Japanese font selected in Illustrator

The Kana Table in one case you have to type and then confirm and the you see the text the other you just type and then the third will allw you to mix with roman characters.
