Elements 10 Organizer will not play MTS files (AVCHD) when Premiere Elements 10 is also installed

Sep 5, 2012 12:06 PM

Hi Forum

I'm using Photoshop Elements 10 Organizer with Premiere Elements10 Installed. I have a number of files of type MTS which I understand to be AVCHD and are imported from my Panasonic Lumix TZ20 camera which captures HD video.

These files will not play in the Organizer, resulting in a message stating the required Codec is missing. However, when the same file is sent to Premiere Elements for Editing and agreeing to a message to have Premiere set the correct properties for the media type it plays perfectly. What am I do wrong? Are there any settings I need to change to have Organizer also play these files successfully?

Many thanks..

Regards

David

Are you on a Mac or a PC? Do you have the latest version of Quicktime installed?

Have you tried manually setting up your project for AVCHD video? This will often download components that are not otherwise available.

Also, have you ensured that you have shot your video in 50i or 60i and NOT 50p or 60p, which are not supported by the program?

I had some similar troubles a year or so back. Adobe recommended installing ffdshow as it provided a DirectShow filter not present in Elements. Try it and see if it works. If it doesn't uninstall it.

Have you tried what I suggested in my first post?

You do understand that AVCHD uses the H.264 codec which was invented by the Quicktime people, right? You need Quicktime to read AVCHD.

And you still haven't confirmed if you started a new project and manually selected for it the Full AVCHD project preset so that the components could be downloaded. But I'm going to assume at this point that you have.

Beyond that, I'm not sure what to tell you. As we always say, your mileage may vary. What works fine on my Windows 7 machine may not work on yours -- and it has nothing to do with the program itself.

But do confirm that your camcorder is shooting in 50i and not 50p. (Your camcorder has the option to shoot in either.) Beyond that and starting a new Premiere Elements project for AVCHD so that the program will download the components, I'm not sure what else to tell you. Sorry.
