Hi Forum
I'm using Photoshop Elements 10 Organizer with Premiere Elements10 Installed. I have a number of files of type MTS which I understand to be AVCHD and are imported from my Panasonic Lumix TZ20 camera which captures HD video.
These files will not play in the Organizer, resulting in a message stating the required Codec is missing. However, when the same file is sent to Premiere Elements for Editing and agreeing to a message to have Premiere set the correct properties for the media type it plays perfectly. What am I do wrong? Are there any settings I need to change to have Organizer also play these files successfully?
Many thanks..

David
Are you on a Mac or a PC? Do you have the latest version of Quicktime installed?
Have you tried manually setting up your project for AVCHD video? This will often download components that are not otherwise available.
Also, have you ensured that you have shot your video in 50i or 60i and NOT 50p or 60p, which are not supported by the program?
Hi Steve, Thanks for the response. My main objective is to be able to play the videos from within Organiser without having to tsart Premiere at all and I know this should be possible. I have checked my camera and it captures video in format: 1920 x 1080 (50i) Full HD Movie in AVCHD Format.
So I guess my issue is centred around where in Premiere do I set the default Codec to play these types of video directly from within the Organiser? And which Codec should I use? None of those listed under the Pal heading closely describe my type of Video. Or as you suggest should Premiere automatically have downloaded a more appropriate Codec?
Hope you can help...
Kind regards
David
Hi Steve
PS, yes have tried a mix of available AVCHD codecs under the Pal heading in Premiere Project Settings, and as I say the videos play okay from within Premiere when imported from Organiser for editing within a project. But none of these experiments work when trying to play the video from within Organiser?
Kind regards
David
I had some similar troubles a year or so back. Adobe recommended installing ffdshow as it provided a DirectShow filter not present in Elements. Try it and see if it works. If it doesn't uninstall it.

Hi Neale
Thanks for the suggestion, I will give that a try to see if it works, but would be happier for an official Adobe fix for this instead of installing 'outside' software to solve Adobe related problems.
But thanks very much for the suggestion will give it a go and advise outcome.

Hi Steve, yes tried all those suggestions. I did reply to you with the results, which can be seen in the above posts. But included here...

Hi Steve, using PC with Windows 7. I will update Quicktime but they are not in the Quicktime MOV format. They are MTS (AVCHD) but will try that anyway.
Hi Steve, updated Quicktime but no change to the reported problem. By the way the MOV and AVI files have always played okay in the Organiser.

You do understand that AVCHD uses the H.264 codec which was invented by the Quicktime people, right? You need Quicktime to read AVCHD.
And you still haven't confirmed if you started a new project and manually selected for it the Full AVCHD project preset so that the components could be downloaded. But I'm going to assume at this point that you have.
Beyond that, I'm not sure what to tell you. As we always say, your mileage may vary. What works fine on my Windows 7 machine may not work on yours -- and it has nothing to do with the program itself.
But do confirm that your camcorder is shooting in 50i and not 50p. (Your camcorder has the option to shoot in either.) Beyond that and starting a new Premiere Elements project for AVCHD so that the program will download the components, I'm not sure what else to tell you. Sorry.
Hi Steve, thank you for your patience, and no I didn't Quicktime controls the ability to play AVCHD, I'm a novice on this subject - sorry. I tried to play one of my MTS files directly in Quicktime and it stated unrecognised media. So perhaps you are right about the 50p issue. I have checked my camera and it states 50i only. But am right now downloading the latest firmware for the camera and will shoot a video in 50i format and see if that plays correctly in Quicktime.
Here is the setting I have selected in the new project HD1080i 25 frames per second.
Will be back with the results shortly.

Hi Steve, okay applied the latest firmware for camera - double checked it is shooting video in AVCHD mode 50i and it is/always was. Took some footage and imported the file into Elements Organizer. The file does not play within Organizer. But if I export the file from Organizer to Premiere using the Organizer function -> Right click on Thumbnail, select Edit with Elements Premiere Editor, once in Premiere it plays perfectly. So Premiere must have or have access to the correct AVCHD codec. But when trying to play the same file directly from within Elements Organizer using function -> Right Click on Thumbnail, select Play Video or Audio it says the file cannot be played because your system does not have the correct compressor/decompressor installed.
Now everything I have read about Elements Organizer coupled with Premiere states that Organizer uses the Codecs from Premiere to achieve playback. So why does the file play okay in Premiere but not in Organizer? There must be some detachment between the two programs when retreiving the required Codec? Creating a new project with the PAL Full AVCHD mode does not seem to solve the problem either.
Where to now?
