Transition between few short clips

Sep 4, 2012 12:50 AM

Tags: #problem #transition #clips #adobe_premiere_elements_10

I have lets say 3 clips.

long - short - long

I want to create transition between 2nd and 3rd but the 2nd clip is so short, that the transition looks not good

The best effect I will have if the transition could also overlaps clip 1st.

So this is what is possible:

_____|------------|

long - short - long

and this is what I want to be possible:

_|------------------|

long - short - long

Any ideas how to do this?

Only thing I managed to think of is to render only 1st and 2nd and reinsert them to timeline.

You need at least 1 second of transitional material beyond the beginning or end of your clip to create a smooth transition. Longer if it's a longer transition. In other words, if you have a two second clip and you want a two second transition, you will see the transition -- but as soon as it's over the clip will end!

The only alternative is to force the program to work without transitional material. In this case, you'll end up with a freeze frame through the transition, then your clip will start.

You can adjust the Duration of a Transition. With Stop Motion, and similar, I often go with a Transition, that is quite short, about half the Duration of each Still Image. If one is doing many shorter Transitions, the Default Duration (both for Video & Audio) can be set in Edit>Preferences. If one needs a particular Transiton to be longer, then it can be adjusted for Duration manually.

With Video, one does need Handles, as Steve mentions. This article goes into more detail on Handles, what they are, and how they affect Video Transitions: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/701768?tstart=60

    Good luck,

Add a white color matte (Tasks Pane> New Item> Color Matte ...) to your timeline above the other video tracks. Stretch it to cover the start - end of the whiteout and keyframe its opacity to give the fade-in / fade-out effect.

Yes, you've definitely got us confused, gemgreg.

I'm not sure what you mean by "add a transition that will cover all 3 of them at once" and "not between them". Transitions are, by definition, BETWEEN CLIPS.

It sounds as though you may just be fading to black (or white). But how will you have all three clips onscreen at the same time?

If you're proposing to have one clip followed by the next followed by the next, all the while fading to black or white, that's easy enough to do. But you really need to be clear on what exactly it is you're trying to do.

Okay, here's what you need to do.

Open a separate project with just the two or three clips you want to use in your transition sequence. Put them on the timeline and then use Share/Computer to output them.

If you're working in standard definition video, use Share/Computer/AVI with the DV preset.

If you're working in high definition video, use Share/Computer/MPEG with the AVCHD 1920x1080i option.

This will create a single clip that includes your three video segments.

Put this new clip on your timeline and you should be able place your long transition over it.

There is -- in Premiere Pro, which allows embedded timelines. Not in Premiere Elements though. Sorry.

As I thought, that's the only way to do it.

In PRE there is never only one way to do things .

Did you try my suggestion in response #4?

    GemGreg2,

Glad that Neale's workflow was what you needed! As he states, there are often many ways to accomplish the same end.

    Good luck, and happy editing!

PS - If Neale's method got you what you needed, please see this article: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1058744?tstart=0
