OK, and assuming that you are on Windows from the last comment, what is the make/model of your video card? Next, what is the date and number of your installed video driver? Is that the latest from the nVidia, or ATI Web site?

Last, when looking at the Layers Palette, what do you see for the Layers? Is Visibility (the eyeball to the left) turned ON for all?

Maybe post a screen-cap of one of those Images Open, with the Layers Palette visible?

Bill is on the right track. Outdated or buggy display driver is my bet.

If disabling the use of the Graphics Processor in the Edit - Preferences - Performance dialog (then restarting Photoshop) works around the problem, you need an updated display driver.

It's a ATI Radeon 3200 and the driver is current. I disabled the Graphics Processer and it seems to be working now. If ATI and windows say the driver is current, will it be possible or even necessary to update the display driver?

Glad that you have a workaround.

If ATI/AMD says that you have the latest (I am not 100% sure how accurate their driver utility is, so you might want to verify that you DO have their latest), that should be fine. However, if you let Windows tell you, it will most likely be at least 6 mos. out of date. Same for most 3rd party driver utilities. I feel that they are NOT to be trusted, and I always verify the driver number & date on my system. I do not bother to have nVidia survey my system. I just go to drivers and check number and date.

Go into Photoshop's Help - System Info... menu and copy the top section, and past it in a post here (you might want to redact the Serial Number info). That will tell us just what you're running.

Catalyst 12.8 is the latest package release from AMD/ATI, but the System Info readout won't correllate directly to that (that would just be too easy). However, we can determine the specifics from what's there. Here's what my Catalyst 12.8 (latest release) is reporting for individual versions:

Dear Noel,

I have had exactly the same problem when I updated my photoshop to CS6. Disabling the processor enabled me to see the imported pictures that previously had only been visible as thumbnails in the layers.

I have copied my system info and pasted it below.

And your video card driver is 4 years out of date.

Go update the driver from the GPU maker's website, and follow their update instructions.
