basic question on filters.

i dont spend much time in photoshop actually using filters. almost everything i do in photoshop is menus for Encore, and most of the creativity i use is almost all content aware related with after effects and general video work. i have a general understanding on how to use PS though.

 

question is, how would i get the effect of this picture? i'm just not sure what would be used to get the bold stark blacks and whites. seal003.jpg

    Andy,

     

    I would start with Image>Adjustment>Threshold, and explore the look with the slider. Perhaps a hint of Noise would be good too.

    What Bill said, plus maybe a bit of curves after to raise the black point above stark black just a little.
