I also am having an issue.
I am running 10.7.3 however.
I installed InDesign CS6 (version 8.0) and if I have all my plugins running it will crash EVERY TIME on start-up.
However, I systematically removed all plugins and found that the plugin that causes the problems are:
PMPACK (completel doesn't work)
UI (lags the computer, very slow) - but if I remove UI I have NO tools.
Any ideas or suggestions?

That's good, but it's a hang, not a crash, so we actually need you to do a bit more to gather more information.
Please see Adobe Forums: InDesign CS5.5 Not Responding for some instructions on how to force the application to crash after the hang so we can see more of what is going on.
Yes, that's the one.
This really looks like a crash in Apple code. The last thing from adobe before the crash is the PM Welcome screen (does that actually load?) You mentioned earlier that you tried disabling it.
I don't recognize the crash specifically, and John Hawkinson, our real hang/crash expert has been mostly absent the past few weeks.
Have you tried trashing the prefs yet? See Replace Your Preferences
You say it will run, but very slowly, with the PM pack disabled? What other programs do you have running? Do you have Hiss?
Thank you.
The Welcome Screen does not come up (a white box that should be the screen does not come).
The computer does not run at all with the PM pack disabled. It does run with the UI, but it runs extremely slow and freezes and really not workable.
Hopefully John can take a look.
I can close every other program, and there is still the same errors. And, no I do not have Hiss.
I will trash the prefs, but this was fresh install. Will let you know the outcome.
OK.
If the prefs don't work, my next instinct would be to think about uninstalling, running the clean tool (CS Cleaner Tool for installation problems | CCM, CS6, CS5.5, CS5, CS4, CS3) and reinstalling.
Which version of the OS are you on, now? 10.7.4 has a crash problem with some hardware (most likely not yours) that can be corrected by followint the instructions at InDesign Help | InDesign Crashes with Blank Dialog Boxes on MacOS 10.7.4
And since you've made changes it would probably be a good idea to run another set of reports.
Other diagnostic steps would be to create a new user account and try that, and to try starting the Mac with extensions disabled (hold down the Shift key when you start up) and see if ID runs. Success in a new user implies a problem in the existing user, not ID itself, and success with extensions disabled implies a conflict with some other running software.
I'm having the exact same thing here......I am creating our image for our school and worked fine and the machine has been sitting waiting to be tested and finding out no one has touched it since its been in place for about a month now and thought I would test and I launch Indesign CS6 and it gets to the Welcome Screen and hangs like you describe! Worked fine before, what happened all of a sudden?
The quick fix I found was in that PMPack folder just remove the PMWelcomeScreen.InDesignPlugin
So remove:
/Applications/Adobe InDesign CS6/Plug-Ins/PMPack/PMWelcomeScreen.InDesignPlugin
Then launch Indesign again and it should start up fine, without the welcome screen of course. But why does this happen, shouldn't have to be removing plugins and stuff that got installed with the software to begin with. Another is the SING folder, never understood that either if you are familiar with it.
Not having issues with the UI plugin that I know of. Just found this problem like 30 minutes ago and trying to find a fix. I don't want to image 300 macs and then find out Indisign stopped working for some stupid reason. By the welcome screen plugin breaks anything doesn't make any sense to me. Trying to remember if I pushed any updates out to that one test box or not. Don't think I did. Stopped working all by itself.
My new image is running 10.7.4 on a 21.5" 2011 iMac with 8GB ram.
I think with CS 6 anyway that the welcome screen is trying to call home to adobe. Why or for what I'm not sure just yet. Once Indesign opens, if you close the welcome screen and go under the help menu and launch the welcome screen again it does the same thing and hangs for a minute or so. Right now I think its our firewall blocking it.
People having issues with this, are you home users or working at a business behind firewalls and stuff?
Either Indesign isn't using our proxy settings set in the system or we have something messed up on our network. If I take the problematic computer and put it in our office where there is no restrictions or proxies Indesign launches fine.
***Update***
So it seems if your computer has a network connection this plugin for the welcome screen calls home to Adobe for some reason. If I turn off internet access then Indesign launches fine. I don't see anything on the welcome screen that it would have to call home for. But it is and the Adobe software doesn't seem to be using the settings set in OS X to use the proxy server from what I am seeing. So to me it looks like a bug with Adobe's software because its not using the proxy server set in OS X network preferences. Hopefully if I am correct about the Adobe software not using the set proxy server settings in OS X they will fix it. Also noticed Dreamweaver CS6 not connecting on teh bottom right of the window, so its not using the set proxy settings in OS X either.
Work around:
Punch a whole in firewall
or
Remove:
/Applications/Adobe InDesign CS6/Plug-Ins/PMPack/PMWelcomeScreen.InDesignPlugin
Wondering if we are going to see this fixed in 8.0.2 and when 8.0.2 may be released? The apps need to use the proxy settings and any other bugs found. I am having issues still with crashing and not sure what the problem is. The startup crash and I think the fix is above in my previous post, but I'm having random problems with students getting corrupt files and Indesign crashing randomly, but mainly at startup and first file creations.
Should note I am having the crashing on 10.8.2 now as well.
