Having trouble modifying brushes

I use CS3 on a macbook.  I have been trying to make or modify a brush that would make a nice line boarder to outline text. I do not like any of the presets I have tried to modify some useing the instructions in the help menu I get to a panel that looks like I ought to be able to change certain things but it just won't let me make any changes. I have tried to create new but it either takes the different tiles for corner, side etc and stickes them all into the first area indicated or only does one of them insiting on creating a new brush for each section which does not allow them to work together to form a contiguous outline. How can I make this work?
